intake sensor question on slk55

my buddy brough his slk55 over to have some work done. we noticed a rather large sensor in each of the two intake ducts that are mounted in the front radiator support. The sensors look identical and are rather bulky (rectangular in shape). Can anyone tell me what these sensors are for? Thank you.

I believe they are the collision sensors for the airbags. Poor choice of location, though...

The crash sensors or impact sensors are not in the air ducts the are on the opposite side of the radiator support... and as for bad location where do you suggest to put "frontal acceleration sensors" maybe in the rear bummper, or better yet how about in the interior to keep them safe. MB has produced the safest cars around, hands down no contest. Ive seen people walk away from serious recks in mercedes vehicles so i think they know what there doing. haha

Your face would be a "serious WRECK" after my roundhouse catapulted the "frontal acceleration sensors" down your gullet.
