LSD? Has anyone experimented?

Not the drug; talking about a limited slip differential. Wondering how complex the install is (by a trained tech). Any possible drawbacks? Also, is it worth the money? Mercedes' "immitation" setup seems to work ok, but there are times when I know an LSD would help matters. Thoughts? Thanks all.

Put in a Quaife LSD part under ($1000) labor was 8 hrs.
Nothing noticeable except at the track where the car is transformed after slower turns which require steady acceleration upon track-out. Also I'm sure the car will be better in the snow (not for me). Also gas milage is unchanged as well. So if you track the car it will be a worthwhile modification after getting compound tires.

Thanks for your comment. Since I do not plan on tracking the car, I will shelve this mod. You just saved me a $1k+!

I've just got it installed, it is one of the best modifications I've done. I cant think of a better performance modification I've done in regards of performance to $.

I've got the Kleemann supercharger on my car and has extremely high levels of torque down low, I keep the car in S-mode and in first gear and I give it full throttle; In first gear traction light shows up for 2-3 seconds then I am off and shift 2-3. I must say 95% improvement never thought it would be this great with the power and 19" wheels.

I think LSD is one of the best mods you can do to any car, the Quaife unit transformed the overall feel of my car (BMW 335) even during daily driving commute as I always drive now with all nannies off.. get a quote from HP Autowerks of Santa Barbara on how much they would charge for Benz install

It costs me around $600 dollars to install here, 8-10 hour install.

Great feedback, alroumi, thanks. Now I'm interested again... Are there any negative effects from the LSD? Like rear bucking when negotiating slow tight turns? I drove in a modded turbo Infiniti G35 with a crazy mechanical LSD and it bucked like crazy getting out of the parking lot. Very annoying.

Also, is the LSD from Kleeman a rebadged Quaife unit or is it proprietary? Any pros/cons on each? Thanks all.

There is no rear bucking whatsoever, this unit feels like oem 100%. The LSD from Quafie doesnt need servicing like changing the oil, the Kleemann one does. I would recommend the quafie.

Thanks, Alroumi; the Infiniti G35 must have had the clutch-plate style LSD.
Thanks James, I'll contact you regarding an install; a fair price.

I spoke with James at Automotive Connoisseur Group in San Diego and made an appointment to install the Quaife LSD on January 12th (a little xmas gift for myself...). I'll take a bunch of photos of the process and do a full write up on the benefits afterwards. Stay tuned...

Good choice. I was an early Quaife adopter on my slk and it really is fit and forget also the 4th car I have fitted one to so you could say they made an impression. Im soon to fit AMS headers so we are converging on the same set up and due to your instal of the same although Im going to junk the secondaries at least for starters.

Thanks for the comment; good to know that you have had Quaife LSDs in many cars. Helps with the "peace of mind" - I've never done an LSD upgrade on any car I have owned.

Finally got the LSD installed! James at ACG did a fantastic job; his shop is hospital room clean and he and his techs did a very carefull thorough job. Very, very professional! James double checked the work himself. In fact most dealerships should learn from this shop. This will be my tuner shop of choice when installing complex mods.

Unfortunately I have not had a chance to run the car much since it has been raining in Los Angeles. However, from my brief experience the car now hooks up and goes rather than have any wheel slip. Also important is that the car drove exactly like stock while on the freeway (both bumper to bumper traffic and at 80+ mph) from San Diego to Los Angeles; no gear chatter, no noise, no whine, etc. Quaife is the way to go.

I will post photos and have a more complete review shortly.

You were right, alroumi, now the car can handle much more power. It just hooks and goes. It is hard to explain the near seamless improvement, but improvement nonetheless. The supercharger kit makes more sense now. Screw quarter mile slips; I'm going to track the car at some point.

Here are a few pics of the install. Not a quick or easy job; best to have a hoist, proper tools and a factory manual.

It has been a couple weeks of driving somewhat aggressively and the car is hooking up like crazy. Unbelievable change in traction.
