Is there a spare tire for the SLK55?

Do the US bound SLK55s have spare tires or run-flat tires or some kind of seal pump or...

If there's a spare tire, what is the size? Where is it; in the trunk or under it? Can I get rid off the spare tire and put a sub in there?

95% sure the SLK55 comes with a sealing kit rather than a spare to save space (and increase storage capacity)

As to the SLK350, the US Spec car comes with a deflated spare and a pump to attach to the cigarette lighter to inflate it. Assume it is less than a full size spare but never had the need to inflate it to find out for sure. It is located under the floor of the trunk and can be reached from inside the trunk.

Deflated spare and a pump? It has MB written all over it!
Why not use run flat tires or at least as an option? The new Corvette will use the new generation of ultra high performance run flat tires. Therefore there is no problem with performance issue.
By the way, what are you suppose to do with the 18" flat tire! Tie it down to the hood!

As I recall the run flat's are a delayed option on the SLK350. Perhaps they will be available by the time the SLK55's are manufactured? My problem with run flats is that I live in an area where winter tires are mandatory from late September to May so unless I want to garage my vehicle for most of the year I would be without their benefit anyway. Unless--- there is a runflat snow tire out there???? Likely not.

As to the 18" you take off, I guess you could fit it into the trunk with the top up and use string to keep the trunk lid from flapping until you got to the tire shop. In addition to spare string take along a large sized trash bag to slip the tire into.

Here's a thought.....When you go to change into your winter tires, how the hell will you be able to carry your set of 4 summer tires.....make 4 seperate trips And to do that twice a year

Run-Flats Only One Time

Another thing about run-flat tires is that if you get a puncture, I believe that the tire is toast. It cannot be fixed. Does anyone know if that is correct?

availability

Actually, the run-flats can now be ordered for the 350 (they are officially available from November on, but as newly ordered cars won't get a production date prior, you'll be fine). As for the SLK55, the Z rated size tires the 55 comes in don't come in run-flats. I.e. Run-flat tyres aren't availalbe on the SLK55 anywhere (Germany for example has a lot more options for the SLK you can't get in the US - but Run-flat isn't one of them). For certain, there won't be a run-flat options (and sensors) for the 05 model year, and probably not for 6 either.

You could use some kind of sealent for the winter time.
You are right. I make sure I have strings and X-large garbage bags!

Corvette has 18" front and 19" rear tires. Besides, tire makers would be more than happy to make them!

Run flats

Speaking from experience with run flats on a corvette. Yes a puncture can be fixed. The run flats on the vette are very noisy. I've found that the noise from a run flat tire that comes into the car varies greatly from car to car e.g. lexus sc430 vs vette. I would much prefer a spare available for the 55 ala 350. The only excuse I could think of for MB not doing this is if the exhaust system on the 55 needs to use some of that underbody space where the current spare resides. They just started to provide spare on the 05 E55 which was accomplished by simply moving the battery to the right side of the trunk. The 03 and 04 E55 had no spare.

I had a flat rear tire, and it will fit in the trunk...just hope you don't have a trunk full of luggage or expect to put the roof down when you are carrying the tire. BTW, after using the spare, you have to remove the tire valve to get all the air out, otherwise there's no way you will get back into the well where it is stored. Fortunately MB supplies a valve extractor. Even after removing all the air, it's a very tight fit. Just push and pull and you will get it in.
