SLR Wreck in the UK

Pictures of an SLR wreck here in the UK. Car was driven by a former champion boxer who was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident. Occupants of the Golf were badly injured. Looks like the SLR was overtaking on a blind crest and hit the Golf head on.

What an IDIOT! He must have been hit in the head one too many times, i doubt his insurance company is going to react to that one very well, he could have just given the thing to me and saved himself the legal trouble

By no means the first accident he's had either, I believe he wrecked an F355 on a test drive.

There were apparently 3 of them in the car... and they were uninjured. The Golf driver had broken limbs. Notice too how the hood has been ripped off and is now lying in the middle of the road...

Ripped apart ... Naz's £300,000 Mercedes is reduced to a heap of scrap metal after yesterday's crash
Pictures: GARY BAGSHAW

FULL NEWS INDEX

By NEIL SYSON

BOXING champ Prince Naseem Hamed was today bailed after being arrested over a 209mph car crash.

The smash happened during a “crazy overtaking bid” — leaving a man seriously injured.

Naz, 31, who is said to have fled the smash scene, was quizzed by cops along with two 26-year-old men, who have also been released on bail.

A police spokesman said they were being questioned about leaving an accident and attempting to pervert justice, adding: “There’s an ongoing investigation into the true identity of the driver.”

Naz and the two men, one of whom is thought to be his brother, were nicked at the star’s £3million home a stone’s throw from the crash.

Last night witnesses said the ex-world featherweight champion’s £300,000 silver McLaren Mercedes SLR had crashed attempting a “crazy” overtaking manoeuvre on a country lane.

The car — with the number plate NAS1 — is said to have tried to whip past a long line of traffic.

But it allegedly clipped one of the cars it was overtaking, then ploughed head-first into an oncoming gold VW Golf.

Horror ... firemen cut driver of VW Golf from the wreckage

The two-seater Mercedes slewed on to a grass verge and back on to the road in Sheffield. Its bonnet and a front wheel were ripped off and the whole driver’s side mangled.

The Golf driver was trapped in his car and had to be cut free by firemen.

He was airlifted to the city's Northern General Hospital with serious breaks to his limbs. He last night underwent surgery and is this morning "stable" in intensive care, a police spokeswoman said.

A woman passenger suffered cuts, bruises and shock. Her condition in the same hospital was this morning described as "stable" in a ward.

One of the men arrested with Naz went to hospital with chest pains.

The accident happened at 2.30pm on a road with a white “no overtaking” line.

One local said: “I heard a car hurtling up the road.

“There was a bang and a second later another. I ran out and there was a terrible mess. Two men ran past me. I said to them, ‘I think you ought to wait where you are’.

“As they ran away one turned and shouted something like, ‘I’m going to phone’.”

Bailed ... Naz

A witness in one of the overtaken cars said: “You could hear the guy in the VW groaning.”

Car-mad Naz, who retired from the ring three years ago, is a common sight around Sheffield in his motor.

In 1997 he wrote off a £100,000 Ferrari after a fox ran in front of him.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Three men have been released on bail this morning to a date in August.

“They were arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident involving an injury and suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of
justice.”

How horrid...

This shows there is no justice. The crazy driver gets away without a scratch and yet the poor innocent bystanding driver gets injured very badly. I hope he sues the driver for a lot of money. Simply no excuse for ridiculous driving like that. Hope he gets charged with dangerous driving. What is it with sports personalities and the inability to drive?

Im amazed at how good the car looks after a 209MPH crash...which by the way i dont know how they can prove it to such an exact speed. And im also amazed at how it wasnt wrapped around a tree. Lastly, how were 3 men involved in a 2 seater. Im assuming they had a chase car? ;-) Must have been a fast one to keep up at 209mph.

T

edit: also said it was head first, which i dont believe is accurate.

Guys - open your eyes and think about this for a minute! A 209mph crash? Do you REALLY think that either car would still be recognisable after a 209mph head-on impact? And that anyone would be alive? Look at the road - if the SLR came over that crest at 209mph it would still be in orbit now.
Use a bit of common sense - the journo messed up. He took the car's theoretical top speed, put 2 and 2 together and came up with 37.
Three were arrested because the occupants ran back to the owner's mansion, just down the road and a third man joined them. What else? Oh, yes. In the UK it's called a bonnet, not a hood.

Have a nice day.

Don't you just hate a smart-**** brit? For the record, this is a US forum and I try to use American terminology if not their spelling.

Smart-****? If by correcting misinformation I am classed as a smart-****, then so be it. I'd rather be annoyingly correct than live in blissful ignorance.

And the bonnet/hood quote was purely for information, to add a little 'color' to the thread.
I note that you are based in the UK BlueSL - are you a smart-**** or a septic?

edit: septic = septic tank = yank

McLaren do not call it Hood or Bonnet.

They call it "Top-Shell"

Oh no, more confusion! What am I to do? Go with the manufacturer's description? Stick with Ye Olde British spelling? Or use the Americanism and by doing so, lend tacit approval to the use of 'hood'?

What say you, Mr BlueSL?

I may have to ponder this question over the weekend.

Mercedes specs claim that the SLK McClaren's top speed is 207mph. So I find it hard to believe they had a impact at 209mph and walked away. I wonder if they meant 209 KM...which will equal about 130-135mph, lucky to walk away thats for sure. Still....thats one hell of an impact.

Edit: Just to give you guys an idea, these are pics of my Benz hit at only about 40-45mph and got totalled.

This road would have a 60 mph speed limit and the solid white line prohibits overtaking from that side due to limited visibility. I can quite easily see the SLR being driven at 100 on this road and if the Golf was being driven at a leisurely 50, the closing speed would have been 150.

So not 209mph but it was actually a glancing blow - if the collision had been more central, it would have been curtains for all involved.

Have a nice day.

Hey SWISSTJ, i think you need to loosen up whatever is up your *** cuz it is waaaaayyyyy too tight. We pride ourselves on not being a bunch of tightass -eighty plus y/o-rich-fartsy people on this board. We kinda know that it wasnt a 209MPH crash. So no reason to attack the guys on this board just for pondering redundant questions, especially being your first posts.

You need to have a nice day more than us i think. So loosen up and welcome. You will enjoy it here alot more if you do.

I think its clear that article simply states that its a 209mph car---- pointing out/ stating its top speed and NOT the actual speed of the crash.
