SLR's at Auction : $300k - The Final Blowout?

I have run Carfax checks on several SLR's for sale by non-MB exotic car dealers. In a few recent cases the Carfax records show that the cars were auctioned at one of the dealers auctions. The prices at which the dealers are offering the cars suggests that they were purchased for around $300,000 or less. Since these cars have only few miles on them now, this would indicate that the remaining, unsold SLR's from 05 and 06 are finally being liquidated at dealers auctions rather than being sold at appropriate discounts by MB dealers to the dealer's customers. It certainly looks like MB has instructed their dealers not to sell SLR's to the public below a certain base price.

MBUSA/MB AG has given certain dealers incentives to sell the cars quick. We purchased the last 3 'factory fresh' models available. Straight from the factory. I think, similarly to the CGT we'll soon see prices stablize on this awesome machine.

I got to personally drive these cars fairly aggressively at an AMG Challenge event in CA this past May. Your brain has a hard time keeping up with the acceleration - and by the time it does you're over 100+ MPH.

Personally I'd love to own one of these machines.

Thumbs up

At anything around $300k these cars are terrific buy.
I was offered a brand new '06 plus $100k for 599,very tempting but that would blow my relationship with F dealer.

So you were offered $400,000 for a car that is selling for $480,000.

I think it should be steady now the price.

Roadster SLR would be hot though.

I don't know why the prices would not continue their decline. The 2008 model year is very close and there are still unsold 2006's coming available.

I think that this must be a real disappointment for Mercedes and for the people that bought them at the old prices.

The SLR's are $180,000 under MSRP and Ferrari 430's are still $90,000 over MSRP and the production levels on the Ferraris are greater than on the SLR's. It's been a miserable price performance and there is no reason why it will not continue.

That would be in current market pricing.
When that offer was made to me ,SLRs were still in mid 300k and wholesale for 599 in mid 400k.
What is shocking, is the speed of SLR's fall in price...

I think that MB just started them out at a MSRP that was too high. They would have been better off to use the Ferrari pricing model, keep the MSRP low and let the market price stabilize much higher. Instead they went for a high MSRP and the result has been that the market prices trade at a large discount to the MSRP. Regardless of the level of the MSRP, everything finds its own value but I think it is better for the product to see the market price at a higher level to the MSRP then the opposite.

Amazing what happens when they mark them down by $150,000+.

The lucky buyers saved enough money to buy a Porsche Turbo which, by this time next year, might be worth more than the SLR's the way prices are going.

I think they should of marketed it with a free matching S63 or S550 instead, at full sticker.

But then again marketing isn't quite my profession.

Hopefully it will stabilize. I feel sad for all the initial SLR buyers I mean they paid big time for the first few cars.

CRAZY! I think in time it should be at a nice high 200k to 300k range.

Mercedes SLR, SL, Bentley GT
This photo is true. These were for sale about a month ago..still one available for sale as of now. All others were sold.
I believe the price of SLR will go up after they finish selling SLR Roadstar.
If you look back 300SL on 50's, they made Gull wing for about 2 years and then switch to Convertible...exactly on same template! At the same time, they started selling 190 SL. Which over wraps, All the magazines are talking about new AMG gull wing. I am guessing this is actually lower priced version of SLR like old 190SL. They are German, they admire heritage you know...

Yeah it's mine and that tactic severely limits your potential client base. Now you have limited yourself to people who want both cars. There is a significantly decreased chance of finding that buyer.

Four P's of Marketing

Price is one.
