Could you imagine if AMG and McLaren racing each other? Absurbed it may be, but just think of a SL65 AMG (coming soon) racing with the SLR!! Of course the SLR may have the weight advantage as it may well weigh much less. But the greater torque and horsepower from the SL65 (1000 newton meters/700+ pounds feet of torque, 603 horse power) may compensate against the lighter SLR (much less torque, 550 horse power).
It is my understanding that the SLR may have the advantage over the SL65 at the beggining of the 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) acceleration or even 1000 meter or quarter mile times. But after 150 mph (240 kph) or more likely should I say 186 mph (297.6 kph), that the SLR better be watching its rear view mirror... if not it's front view...
It is my assumption that within DaimlerChrysler, politics are at play in Mercedes between it's performance branches namely (AMG and McLaren). As to what gets to be produced with such and such horse power...
Of course the 1001 horse powered Bughatti Veyron at 186 mph in less than 14 seconds will be the fastest commercially main stream market brand with the highest top speed of 252 mph! These numbers of the Bughatti Veyron come from Road and Track magazine, pg.77, May 2003.
I am not even going to touch the idea of a CLK-GTR street version in comparison with the SLR McLaren...
Comments anyone?

That would be awsome!! But isn't there a limiter on the CL65?
Something I have always wanted to see is the CLK GTR vs. the McLaren F1! Street version vs. street version, that would be sick!!! I'm drooling over it already!!

Top Speed
It is my understanding that AMG allows it's cars to be sold without the top speed limiter as an option only due to the "Gentlemen's Agreement" (155mp/h or about 250kp/h) between BMW, AUdi, and Mercedes-Benz.
"A derestricted SL55 with essentiallly the same 5.4 litre supercharged V8 made monkeys of a bunch of supercars at a Nardo test [A speed track in italy] organised by Auto Motor und Sport magazine, topping out at 202 mph..." (Evo, pg.100, Feb. 2003, issue 052) More information is at www.evo.co.uk
I can only presume that both the Vision SLR and the SL65 and CL65 have top speeds well over 200 mp/h (320 km/h). But I do know that the speedometer of the CL65 (since I have seen it from the AMG website) goes up to 340 km/h!
Your idea of a street version of a CLK-GTR (by AMG) racing with a McLaren F1 GTR would be an unfair race due to the fact the AMG car is more advanced. But such a race would between two very respected cars is intriguing.

SLR Nurburgring lap time 7min 43 s - it takes more than just bhp to earn that time.
Try maxing the car and standing on the middle pedal (kids dont try this at home) - I think modified cars can be very good but there is no substitute for a factory developed item.
Rentech - your Porsche must be awesome but the SLR will be another level above it- trust me

Young grasshopper, you know so little.
Check the link to the EDO site
here
FWIW the time of 7:15 soundly beats the Carrera GT as well.

A Porsche GT2 modified by the clever people at EDO Competition clocked a time of 7:15.63 on the 4th of August.

No master - that tuned porsche will last no more than one lap and proves nothing, we can modify the SLR to improve its times no problem. The car comes with a proper warranty, will start from -20 deg C, A/C works at 55 deg C in death valley at idle in drive against a wall.
My point is that engine hp alone proves nothing.

I'm confused. You respond to RennTechV12's comment about his Porsche by quoting the 'ring laptime for the SLR then casually comment that the SLR will be a level above a modded Porsche. I respond by documenting a modded Porsche that trashes the SLR's 'ring time and you fall back on warranties and reliability.
The 'ring is not about HP, it's about handling (and driver skill). So I doubt that a modded Porsche would burn out it's engine after one hot lap. But that is certainly an assumption, as is your assumption that the EDO Porsche would not last more than one lap.
How about this: I'd put MY Porsche against the SLR any day.

I'm not far behind the CGT though, I eat GT2s for lunch! My car started life as an X50, then the boys at TechArt installed a full race handing package with tighter springs and carbon fiber sway bars, they also lowered the car and installed lightweight Recaro racing seats. I then took the car to my local tuner, Dynocomp where they upgraded the power by installing EvoTech software, upgrading the exhaust to an ADE system and changing the air filter to a hi-flow filter. The car now creates a mind blowing 629hp and 631lb/ft of torque.
Let us also not forget that the 996 turbo is an all wheel drive vehicle.
With me behind the wheel around the Ring the finishing order would be:
1) DMin in his CGT
2) Me in my Turbo
3) The SLR
Nuff said!

I live in AZ dude, I took my car to the track last Friday and it ran the 1/4 mile at 120mph...in 105degree heat.

I don't harbor any illusions of possessing racing skills, so I'd actually put you in your modded 911TT ahead of me in my GT.
However, I'll be heading to the track on Saturday, so I guess I'll find out if I've got any game whatsoever. I've been to this track before, but never in something quite as fast as the GT.

You may want to consider THIS I did the 2 day Hi performance driving course in '03, it helped hone my racing skills a great deal.
Let us know how the track turned out. Make sure to have somebody video/take pics.
I was in Germany this summer and got a chance to go to the Porsche test track at Weissach and experience the CGT

Hey guys whatever
I love all performance cars, those who have SLRs can also have CGT`s. The CGT is known to be very tricky on the limit but the SLR is designed to be very forgiving. Two different cars and ideologies.
My point is modified cars are not as good as factory cars due to the lack of all round development.
The SLR is very different to other Mercedes models and just comparing bhp figures is one dimensional.
BTW if you ccan lap the ring in less than 7min45s in anything you should be getting paid.

Let's settle this...
How about a factory Ferrari Enzo to settle the dispute between SLR and CGT. And if there are any further doubts about factory development and modifying cars, let's make this final discussion fused by the FXX Enzo which is factory developed by Ferrari and modified...by Ferrari!

LOLZ i cant believe what im reading, an Sl65 vs an SLR mclaren come on bro and porsche vs mclaren, no contest man. if u didnt know that the supercharger in the mclaren the engines hp needs to be at least 200hp just to use the sc. At moving speeds the slr cant be beat man by any porsche, and if u talk about mods then just get a barbus Slr.

1st off u guys are crazy b/c a cgt is way better than an slr
on the track
an slr is a lighter hardtop sl55 w/ better weight distribution and some more hp... nothing more
if mercedes listened to gordon murray (designer of mclarenf1) then it would have been a proper drivers car (cgt, f1, f40...) but its not
as for sl65 vs slr
an sl65 w/ a few mods will murder it in a straight
not the corners though
