Stock filter replacement options?

Any thoughts? Keep it OEM or does K&N or other companies make drop in filters for SLS airbox?

No one has made them yet. I searched every major air filter company and every tuner and came out with nothing. IF you visit Vath and MKB, you'll find that they are listing that they have sport filters for thier SLS's. I called them, and they have nothing but ****. The only company that started working on making sport filters for the SLS are BMC, and they still dont have any updates for some reason.

BMC is usually the first to release the filters for European vehicles.

A quick check on BMC's website shows that they have a part number for the SLS. Here you go:

MERCEDES - SLS /ROADSTER (C 197) ModelHPYearChassisEngine CodeShapeCode6.3 AMG57110 >FlatFB238/01

BMC still are not offering these filters. Here is a message they have sent to By Design Motorsports, which is a dealer in Saudi Arabia and also a distributor for BMC products

Dear** Mr. Alibrahim,
*
according to our Technical Dept., we regret having to inform you that, unfortunately, the Item P/N FB238/01 has been mistakenly extended to MERCEDES BENZ SLS Series Car Model Application.
*
As per our prior advice on June 14th last, the*new*Mercedes Benz SLS Car Model Application air filter is*currently*under study/evaluation by the competent Technical Dept.
*
Once again pls accept our sincere apology for any inconvenience this may cause you.
*
In the meanwhile we** remain.
*
Best regards.

I have been looking and waiting for replacement filters for ages and now I think I may have to wait longer.

You don't have to copy from others' posts. Try to make up your own words

The BMC filter arrived. We installed them today. This was basically an open and drop procedure, nothing is difficiult. we did it ourselves with no problems.

These are the Airboxes:

This is how the stock panel air filters look like in each airbox:

Now comparing it to the BMC filters. Notice how restrictive the stock filters are and how much free cross section area the BMC filters attain:

They Look better too:

Don't you think it's a risk for the engine to install less restrictive
sports air filters with all the sand and dust over there in qatar?

btw. great SLS
- your beast sounds amazing with the Supersprint headers

Best regards, Daniel

Actually these filters are better in terms of filtration and air flow passage. I don't understand why AMG make these cheap paper filters for their special cars.
Here's a qoute from BMC's website " Compared to a paper filter the BMC air filter permits a notably higher air flow passage, producing less than half the Pressure Drop (difference between the air pressure before and after the filter element) over the paper filters. This doesn't compromise the filter's engine protection efficiency: thanks to the combination of the different oiled layers, containment of all impurities is guaranteed as far as 7 microns, while paper filters generally require total filtration of particles as small as 10 microns. So BMC air filters let more air into the engine while still protecting it better than paper ones.
In addition, a traditional paper filter must be replaced regularly during routine maintenance whilst the BMC air filter is reusable and has a general life-span equal to that of the vehicle. "

Thanks. It's not that it is loud, the tone sounds nice.
SuperSprint made an excellent job putting an italian tone into it

I was thinking the same thing. If anything I might put a thicker filter on to keep it on the outside of the engine , j/k.

Does Mercedes make any modifications to the SLS for Middle Eastern, African, etc deliveries? I know they put larger radiators, different insulation, etc on some models for that market. Just curious.

It is hard for me to predict the sound because the car is already very loud from the SuperSprint Exhaust. But I feel a little bit of increase of acceleration
