Smart in the US

Are there any dealers in the US (CA) ?
What kind of pricing should I expect for the different models?
What sort of milleage do you get out of these things? Miles Per Gallon please.

Thanks

There are no dealers at the moment in California. The closest dealer would be Arizona and Nevada.

Pricing starts out at $25,000 and goes up to $30,000.

I am getting approx 40MPG on my 2004 smart.

25.000$? wow, even with the bad dollar, that's expensive.
in germany, a smart fortwo starts at 9.270 eur (=11,926.69 USD) - including 16% vat!.
but i guess shipping across the ocean isn't too cheap.

btw, the next generation smart fortwo will be introduced into european market in fall 2007. if DC ever enters usa/canada markets directly, it will be with this model, not the current one.

The decision to bring the next generation smart car to the US will be made within a month. If decided then Smarts will be on US shores in 2008.

Courtesty of Mike T who first posted on smartenthusiast.com:

And now from smartup France, the following posting, from a smartville factory worker:

c'est officiel maintenant (annoncé ce matin par le gérant de ma boite en réunion du personnel), la nouvelle smart sera vendu en Amérique.

It is official now (announced this morning - 7 June 2006 - by the manager of my production division during a personnel meeting), THE NEW smart fortwo WILL BE SOLD IN THE USA.

I love the smart car. I just got back from Italy where they're all over the road.

The one thing I'm concerned about however is safety. Can such a small car provide adequate safety? I've seen it collide head on with the Mercedes S Class and it didn't fair to well, it ended up on its side.

You're 1/2 way there.... but I am assuming that acceleration was a given.

Physics says Force = Mass * acceleration.

I for one feel perfectly safe with all these BIG SUVs traveling around me.

I have 4 airbags in my smart and feel as if I am in one large roll cage.

Yes, it was.
I first saw the smart car in Italy about 5 years ago. Wife thought it was cute and if it came in pink she would have tried to bring one back! I did get to sit in one and it wasn't bad, given that I am 6'4''.
But, I still like the mass & velocity of my 500 Coupe.

Cheers,
Steve

Just remember that the american gasoline smarts are 2002-2004 models imported and converted by G&K to be sold by ZAP!. The Canadian ones are diesel, 2006 models, and imported/modified by smat Canada - a member of the Mercedes Car Group and a subsiduary of DaimlerChrysler. So, get a Canadian friend to buy, register, and insure one for you and them bring it to you while you drive it. Just be sure to never bring it to Canada without them in the car

American Mods:
Cover glass roof with padding
Pad interior of Tridion
Add reflectors (front and rear)

Canadian Mods:
Reinforce door from BETWEEN PANELS
Replace oval lights with round reflectors
Install rear pods to add side reflector
Move front turn sigs to fog light position (easy to fix)

Canadian smart:

A guy I work with bought one at the dealer in Pittsburgh and drove it back to Chicago. I believe he paid in the $14-15k range. He wasn't specific.
