US Gas Consumpution

Just purchased a new gas powered 2005 Smart Fortwo. Can any owners here in the U.S. tell me your average gas consumption or range per tank? I seem to be getting 40 MPG at the most with A/C and I'm still trying to learn the car. The recommended RPM ranges especially on the higher gears cause the car to sound like it's lugging. Is it lugging or not? Any response would be appreciated.

I get about 40mpg too. Less when I threw on the Brabus Wheels it went lower too.
