My dad has one, I put on a Doug Thorley exhaust. We can hear just fine when he comes home.

Smarts are loathed around here, due to the manner in which the drivers zip around neighborhoods recklessly, like they are driving in RC Pro Am on Nintendo. They're not inherently accident prone, but the drivers like to exceed normal speeds in neighborhoods and blow through intersections and like tagging bicyclists because they can't stop in time when they finally see them.

In Italy, most people don't like the smart because of the way the owner parks the car. I have seen it where if two cars are parallel parked on the side of the street and if they left just enough space for the smart to park in between them, the smart car will pull in to the spot head first (having the back end of the car sticking out in the street some). Many of the smarts that I have seen have dented doors because of this move.

I just like it because its easy to parallel park in almost all places and its fun to drive around the old streets of our town.

We've got that problem too. Sometimes, we have driveways right next to one another, so they park in between and make a dangerous situation to pull in and out on narrow roads. But I also see the crooked parking jobs from them. Still, the accidents with bikes and pedestrians and near misses are problematic.

Three guys from my company all ordered SMART cars on the same day - Yellow/Red/Blue. Mine was the yellow one and it was never delivered because Yellow was canceled and nobody bothered to tell me.

It's been a few years and the Blue one has been sold, but the red one is still around. Seriously one of the best cars I've had the pleasure of driving. Everyday - central NJ to NYC and back - 85 MPH no problems - rain/snow - no issues. Parking was a breeze - saved $45/day over parking in a lot.

We no longer go to NYC (opened an office in NJ) and she just sits now, most likely dead battery. It's not a practical car by any means - if you don't commute to a city, I'm not sure it's needed.

Smart for Two
2009 Smart

I, too, have a 2009 Smart and I love it. I use it as a toad behind our motoir home.
I have sparked the ground wires installing a battery switch and now I cannot reset the instrument cluster clock or the trip odometer. Any Ideas how to remove the speedo so I can get at the liquid crystal display? The chip is probably there.
Thanks,
Walter &argo

I'm still not seeing much that's "smart" about the Smart car. Let's see, it's overpriced for what it is; it's under-engineered (specifically, the transmission); it's under-efficient (the compromise should be worth at least mid-50s mpg); it's slow (if cross-shopped with even a modest motorcycle...which, I suspect, in many places in the world, happens); and it's dangerous on the highway, due to it's high susceptibility to cross-winds, and its relative size (similar danger to that facing motorcycles, but to a lesser extent...I would be, at least, aware of feeling slightly vulnerable without a helmet in this car, on the highway).

Otherwise, it seems like a great car... (And, Mrs Lincoln did enjoy the opera...)

Getting my girlfriend a Smart in a few weeks. She's excited about it. She refuses to buy anything American, which I can't really blame her, and the only thing really comparable in price is a Nissan Sentra or a Hyundai Accent, both which make me want to heave. And they're both manuals, which she can't drive. Besides, I'd rather put her in a Mercedes-engineered car over anything else.
