I saw one in Miami during the Spring break, this one looks pretty nice!
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
cool car with good space for me (1,88m) and my friend (1,92m). it handles great, and the 6-speed-steptronic work very well!
i like this one:
Does it come standard with the Jaws of Life in the trunk?
I and 62 other people put a deposit on one of these today in Victoria BC Canada - they'll be sold here in about a year. M-B Canada says the car won't likely be offered in the USA...perhaps because of attitudes similar to some seen in this thread....?
I love the Smart and would definately get one as a commuter car. To be able to park 3 of them in 1 parking space downtown would clean up the parking problem.
Why does everyone have to have a 23 foot truck? They aren't any safer.
I just came back from a foreign exchange in Germany... and i have to say... due to the insanely high gas prices there, these things are everywhere! they are pretty cool little cars... with the whole like 60 hp they dont move too well, but they do ok. they are pretty sweet little cars... and they can fit anywhere! if i lived in Europe i would surely drive one of these due to the gas prices. might be a little scary in the U.S. though... too many SUVs and trucks to have SMARTs running around...
I also got my m/c license with only 1 mistake on my road test, but it was a signalling mistake, and could be just fine with other examiners.
I also want a Smart so it will fit in my 2 car garage along with my ML320 and motorcycle.
Mike T. youre from Victoira too?? What a shock!! How much are the Smarts going to be selling for? Kind of neat that Canadas gunna get them...If its cheap enough hell I'll buy one!
The smart city-coupé is supposed to come in at around $14,000 CDN, and a loaded smart cabrio is supposed to be around $20,000 CDN. We want a cabrio at a minimum, but since the smart roadster was released in Europe last April, I've had my eye on one of them. I hope they come over too.
Go to Three Point Motors (TPM) and put a $500 deposit on a smart if you're serious, because there's going to be a waiting list given the limited quantities that TPM will get.
A year ago I had a chance to test drive the smart and smart cabrio that was at TPM, great cars (especially the cabrio)! They're even better now, in the second generation, as they all have full ESP, Brake Assist, Cornering Brake Control, basically the full Benz package. The gas-powered ones got more torque and an improved shifting program too, the latter was done for the cdi as well.
We are number 23 in a list of over 60, so I guess that means we'll have a crack at a smart in the first year.
As for timing, TPM has said that the cars should become available in 2004. Their last letter to depositors (like me) said that March 2004 was the timeline, and that the cdi Diesel version would be the only one coming over initially. How does 3 litres per 100 km on the highway sound to you (90+ MPG imp)! Later rumours put the introduction date back to the fall of 2004. We shall see.....
I have a friend in Germany who will get a press pass to the IAA car show in Frankfurt next month, and if he can get off school (he's a teacher) he'll ask smart representatives in detail about their plans for Canada.
I feel kind of stupid now after having spent the price of a new Smart modding out my car
but when theyre here and test driveable I'm sure I'll fall in love
The crash tests say how well the car fares against hitting a wall. With two vehicles involved having significantly different weights, the lighter one is almost invariably worse off regardless of design. Getting hit in one of these by what one of us Americans would call a normal car is what we would equate with getting hit by a delivery truck. ie you aren't walking away no matter what. I guess there aren't many big cars/no suv's in europe though, so its probably not that much of a problem.
The comment about vehicle mass is valid, but if I had to be in a W202 or a smart that were going to hit each other, I'd choose the smart. The smart is very rigid beyond the deformable crash box and it dissipates its energy by using up the other car's crush space. Not sure what happens when a smart hits another smart though
Wow thanks for all the details! Do you know if MB is planning on bringing over the A class? Any word on the status of the SLA (the very small MB convertible that was to sell at around $45,000 cdn)?
