Mercedes Benz C250 4 Door

Engine Light is On

I have a Mercedes Benz C250 and the engine light is on sometimes and other times when I get in the vehicle the light is off? I have noticed that when I am at a stop light or in neutral the car tends to shake and the RPM's are around 500. I am really hoping this is nothing too expensive. The car currently has 74k miles. Anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this problem? This doesnt happen all the time, but I do notice that when the check engine light is on the car does its shaking thing.

Have you read the code(s)? If you don't have a code reader many auto parts stores can read them. That, IMO, is the first step.
