109 Oil Consumption

Hi. Hope someone can help.

Bought a six month old Vito 109cdi with 3,000 miles. All is fine, then after 2,000 miles the oil warning light comes on. Check the dip stick and there's nothing there. Added a litre and it now registered although only up to the minimum.

Called the garage. They tell me that the van will comsume oil in the early period as it "beds in". Can it use quite that much? Checked for signs of leaks, but there are none. Will running the oil quite so low have damaged the engine? That's a worrying prospect! Garage have offered to check the van out. As I was only able top-up with non-Merc oil, I suggested they might want to provide a full oil change under warranty. Helpfully, they said no.

I'd be really interested to hear from anyone with experience. Thanks in anticipation.

Richard
