Mechanic's signiture on the engine block?
The new w211 E55 info out on benzworld and germancarfans has a little blurb about "One man, one engine...". And that each engine has a plaque with the signiture of the craftsman responsible for building the engine on the supercharger. I recall that our w210 AMG 55 engines were suppose to have the signiture of the engine builder on it too.
Anyone know where this signiture is located on the w210 55 engine?
I also believe that our w210 E55 was the last model to have the AMG conversion done completely at the Affalterbach AMG factory. All new AMG cars have their AMG components (engine, suspension etc.) shipped from Affalterbach to the standard MB assembly lines for installation. Does this really matter? Nah, but I kind of like the idea that my AMG was crafted at AMG.

Did a search, came up empty. Again, anyone know where this signiture badge is on the w210 55 AMG engine? Really curious to see who the AMG craftsman was that hand built my engine.

All of the above
I think it's a myth
Hi MikE55,
I had heard the same thing about the AMG engine builder "signing" the engine. I work for a dealership in PA and just went back and asked two of our experienced mechanics about it. They both said they have had AMG engines out of cars and dissasmbled them and neither had seen any "signature" tag or plate.
Another automotive urban legend ?

Thanks CME4BENZ. Hmm, perhaps it's MB/AMG marketing at it's finest. Well, at least this saves me from constantly searching for it in my engine bay. (Not that I mind gazing at that gem of an engine.)
I sure hope having the AMG engines out and taken apart is not a common thing. Nine months and counting, and my E55 has been absolutely faultless - knock on wood.

Maintenance is not an issue, as normal servicing is now included while the car is under warrenty. After that, I don't suspect it would be any more expensive than any other Mercedes, except maybe for the AMG parts if needed.
Regarding my original post, did more research by reviewing a fairly good AMG article in the Fall '99 Mercedes Momentum magazine. It states: "After the completed engine is thoroughly tested, it receives a 'birth certificate' to document its authenticity."
So instead of a signiture plate, there's a birth certificate? I guess this certificate must be kept in the archives of the AMG factory.

I had no satisfactory response. The MBworld Ambassador from the UK on his trip to Germany was going to look into this matter, but so far have heard nothing.
It sure would be nice to say "THANK YOU" to this master from Affalterbach, - Fritz, Hellmuth, Franz, or Helga?! - whoever built such a masterpiece.
Every one of the 15,000 miles I have driven so far was a true exhilerating experience with this 2002 CLK55 AMG masterpiece, the best car I've owned.

At least for the new generation of AMG cars this signiture plate will not be a mystery. Here is a photo of the new (W209) CLK55's engine, and it appears that the signiture plate is right on top of the engine cover similar to the Brabus photo in this thread.

i will ask for it today, maybe there is not such a nice signature. but i belive there is a way to find out who is responsable for engines, gentlemen.
now something completely different
i like to to my work everyday, not only because of all the nice cars surrounding me...there are also other things in our mercedes-benz dealership.
on the weekend we a little "company-party" (betriebs-feier in german, hope its translated correct). i work in a small office (the disposition) with 2 other people, sandra and jennifer. both very sympatic and great collegues. plz watch this photo of them
...and in the end, it´s all about cars and girls

Felix, thanks for the pics! Man you are one lucky dude, life is tough. Now if you could just find out how we can tell who built our current generation AMG engines, all will be right with the world.

back form work.
only the newest AMG´s have this nice feature. i.e. the CLK55 (w209) and the SL55 (watch photo below), but even the first SL55 don´t have this signature (or anythis else) on the motorblock. but our salesmen are sure the upcoming S55, CL,55 and E55 will have it.
