Pics Of My Cold Air Intake for w210 E55
Yes, some people here STILL drive a w210 E55. No, I didn't buy mine on Ebay for $10,000. Yes, my mother is fat.
WHY? You ask. WHY would someone build a intake for a car that is not sold by ANYONE....even Mercedes tuners?
Good question. But I have an answer. I have plenty of idle time when the kids go to bed and that I quit drinking.
After installing this intake, she ran like poo. My car accelerated like my wife's RX330......yeah, that slow. On hard acceleration, redline/limiter was hit on every gear up to 4 gear. Then, would not let it up shift at cruising speeds for at least 15 seconds. (longer then normal) @ 100 miles later and a array of bad words, it happened. Bam, she accepted her new intake and LOVED it! (um....the car)
Now before you start flaming, I probably only gained @10-15 hp. But, it accelerates faster from a stop and the traction light blinks a lot more (yes, my tires are new) I insulated the heat shield for noise reduction, it now is not noticable in the cab....just a little louder on the outside.

Pretty slick AMG, well done.
Your car is a classic, of course I may be biased as I had one too except for your fine chrome Monoblocks.
A deep bow on the quit drinking part too.

looks good.
i was thinking of going the single pipe route as well.
what did you use as the heatshield iteslf? i'm currently working with thin flash aluminum which will be covered in somewhat the same material as yours. just need more time to tweak it some more.

2)The heat shield is almost a match...a little tweaking.
3)The tube has to be cut @ 6" shorter...but it has the proper bends while being a healthy 4" diameter.
4)You have to buy a 90 degree 3.5" intercooler tube/elbow. The 90 degree elbow has to be high quality, I bought a cheap one the first time and it would collapse when the tube got hot under acceleration.
5)Buy the biggest cone filter K&N or Green makes.
6)Insulate the heat shield to reduce noise, it will also help with the engine heat.
I will post all the sources of my materials tomorrow. I sometimes break the tires on second gear now with this intake. Maybe more torque than horsepower
I have spent @ $500.00 in experimentation for this intake to look and fit right. In the begining, by my PCM trying to compensate for the new volume of fresh air told me it was going to work. And it does

thanks for the info! i should be able to get all this at work.

Thank you guys for keeping our "retro" cars alive!
90 Degree tube.....http://stores.ebay.com/Siliconeintakes
4.7L hemi intake.....(my mistake...it was a 4.7L hemi intake)....http://stores.ebay.com/SPEEDING-TRAC...QQftidZ2QQtZkm
Cone filter has to have at LEAST a 3.5" opening. (tube is 4")
Home Depot or Lowes sells the insulation and foil tape....along with the aluminum duct tubing for the front grill (2.5")
I will take the intake out and post install pictures in the next few days. I will also show you where to put the mount screws. I know the foil makes it look cheap, but it works!

That set-up WILL work. The tube I installed from the front grill forces air into the cone....without water pick-up. In fact, you will see that the set-up I'm talking about gets more fresh air than factory. So, in another words...it would be great for a ram air intake.
Those silicon 90 degree tubes you found are probably a little too 90 degree. ( it is a perfect 90 degree, not an elbow) The elbow I listed costs $19.00 + a smoother flow being a gradual bend. I could be wrong though!

I've done cold air intake in my Pathfinder with the heat shield and everything - when it was hot, it was actually slower ;-(((
But in evening or rain or colder wheather - it was faster.
Do you have any issues like that in hot weather?

This intake is acting as a true cold air ( well, at 104 degrees outside temp...its cooler then engine temp) My intake is touching the hood insulation when closed (yeah, that tight!) and has two cold air feeds. It feels strong during the heat of the day. In fact, I have laser temped the filter after running it hard....it was a cool 97 degrees! Trust me, for @ $150.00 in parts...you can't go wrong!

Excellent job. Most people dont realize how much power is loss with unshielded CAI's. The heat shield protects the cone from both fan wash and engine heat. Good job!

what yr is your 55? I am actually about to buy a 01'. It has the twin intake. I was also looking at a 99', and if i recall, it only had a single intake. is that what yours is? I was at the dealer inspecting the twin deal on the 01' and it looks like it is already ram air... any thoughts?
and BTW, congrats on that awesome job! i have also made a intake system from my supercharged suburban, and your right, with the proper heat shielding and routing, you actually can make more power regardless of air temps!

Sorry about that....I have been busy (um....lazy ) I will get them as soon as I have a free moment. Oh, by the way....I have just improved the intake design. Hold off on what I have shown you guys. The new set-up is better.

i just finished installing my version of amgdriven's single pipe intake. i always thought the oem amg intake setup was restrictive, so i was weary on improving my other intake setup. thanks amgdriven for the pics and help so far!
i used 2-45 degree 3.5" aluminum tubing from Vibrant Performance... http://vibrantperformance.com/catalo...2b1a6e04a68673
the 3.5" 90 degree elbow... http://vibrantperformance.com/catalo...2b1a6e04a68673
only had a somewhat small cone filter that had a 3.5" opening from my other setup lying around, so i used that for now. for the heatshield i used flash aluminum and insulated it on both sides with this... http://www.bondedlogic.com/insulatorfeatures.htm
not only does the trac control light blink like it wants to give me a seizure, but the engine note sounds unreal upstairs. throttle response is as crispy as fried chicken, and power seems to have picked up all over the place (especially at upper rpm's).
thanks again for posting up them picks amgdriven. the thought of this intake had crossed my mind some time ago, but your post solidified the fact that i should try it. i'd love to see what you did next.......so post them pics!!

some pics...
what you don't see in these pics is the brackets i made for the intake piping and heatshield. made them about 10 mins after taking these pics.
