I don't think you can replace it legally outside dealer. Dealer will even ask you to leave the car w/ them when they order directly from Germany / whereever the supplier is and have it coded the exact miles you have on your car.

Been there done that before... yes, I paid $1200 almost right after the warranty expires (I felt it was an intentional move by MB that the LED got blown after the warranty expired ). If I am not mistaken, $900 parts & $300 labor (or the other way around).

Took the dealer 2 weeks to get the parts First, it was the wrong part. And then, misdelivery. Then, after almost a year, I realized it was still the wrong part (no digital speedo feature). Thanks to this forum so I could convince the dealer that it was the wrong part. So had it replaced again and took me about a week.

My clock and temp have gone 'hieroglyphic' just 3 months after warranty expiration and with only 35,000 miles

Instrument clusters are covered under emissions 7 year/70,000 mile warranty. The dealership should be able to help you out.

Huh??? Are you sure about this?? Since when instrument cluster is part of emission? If so and you are kind enough to provide me w/ solid documentation, I'd like to give it another shot to get reimbursement from the dealer.

TJC... so you give me another point that the instrument cluster is just like a time bomb that is set to explode after the warranty expires....

I've replaced many instrument clusters after they were out of the standard warranty because of the pixel malfunction that have been covered under emissions warranty. Unfortunately I don't have any documention to back this up. Did a dealer replace the cluster and charge you for it??

Yes, the dealer replaced it and charged me. I didn't question anything as it occurred about 8 months or 8000 miles after the warranty expired and did not think that it would be covered under emission warranty.

I'll try to dig some documents.... and just hope that I got a $1200 gift this year from MB

Wagondad, if you are successful claiming it as emission warranty, let me know.... I think it'll help me increase my chance to get $1200 gift this year

Checked w/ MBUSA.... they said instrument cluster was covered by 4yr/50K warranty, not 7yr/70K emission warranty.

So unless Glassjaw or wagondad could prove otherwise on paper, I don't think I'd get my $1200 gift this year

Well I did some research today and found that I was misinformed about the clusters being covered under emissions warranty for the pixel malfunction. Apparently, not too long ago, one of our warranty administrators was telling technicians they could be replaced under emissions warranty. Turns out he was wrong and all of the clusters got shipped back to the dealership from Benz. Whoops!!!

Anyways, they ARE covered if the Check Engine light is affected. Like if the cluster is completely blank or shorted out.
