Thumbs down

That makes no sense. That E55 must have tons of miles on it. It might have been wrecked too.

I have determined that the "general public" honestly has no idea what an E55 is!

To most used car dealers and their potential buyers it comes across as just another "older body style" E-Class sedan.

The people who know and appreciate what our cars actually are and can do....are few and far between. This creates a low demand for our cars...hence there are people out there for whatever reasons (financially?) end up "whoring" these fine vehicles....and the rest of us car enthusiast owners suffer the consequences.

I was recently looking at "possibly" leasing a new Audi S5 coupe...and the dealer offered me only $14k for my E55!

If I were selling my car today I'd ask at least $21k for it...and not sell it for a penny less. Its a fabulous sport sedan and nothing out there for $20k can touch it!

well, the w210 55's are getting on in their years, so this price doesn't surprise me (depending on the miles).

i'm asking $19k for my 01 w/79k miles, and it's still too high for the current market.

The point was that, this beetle retained 60% of its value while the AMG lost 80%. They are both same year and similar miles . Here is another one!!!!

Your right, People don't know what our cars are. It sucks but our cars are awesome. I love my E55 and there isn't many cars that can touch them. I think these will be as low as these will go though as far as price is concerned. The normal public needs to be educated.

FWIW, I inquired about that car a while back, I don't know what the deal with it is...personally I didn't feel it was legit...here is the reply (Nov. '07):

"Hello,

Sorry for this late reply I almost had the car sold but the buyer changed his mind last minute due financial reasons also I have been overwhelmed by the number of emails I got from interested buyers after listing the car on Yahoo! Autos and Autotrader, hundreds really! I must avoid the chit-chat as I don't have time for it so I hope I will cover here all the aspects of this purchase and answer to all the questions you might have. The car is in good running condition and comes with a clear title. There is no lien on the car, there will be no monthly payments, no take over payments, just final price. No damages, accidents or scratches of course. I am looking to sell it right away for $15,000 (shipping and title transfer fees included). There is a reason for selling it for such a low price but it's just something personal and I'm not willing to discuss it so please don't ask. The car is located at the Yahoo Shipping Center, I am in the military on duty outside the country and have nobody back home that could handle this so I had to leave it there (they will take care of the SHIPPING/PAYMENT).

If you are still interested please go to http://autos.yahoo.com and click the sign up link in order to register (Activate your e-mail account too) then get back to me with you user id so I can contact Yahoo and ask them to provide details about the transaction process.

Thanks,
Michael
PS: it have 36900 miles."

I would have taken the $14k. Last Nov. I was offer 7K for mine, and they are a Mercedes sales and service shop.

And why is that? Why an 01 Toyota truck that costed 1/3 of these AMG's back then should go for the same price now?

I was told that (that time of year anyhow) people did not want high performence cars. People either wanted the gas saving cars or nothing at all, and that people just weren't buying...specially now with the economy. I was told however that spring may bring prices up a little. But either way $14K isn't too bad for trade-in(depending on year and miles) Better off selling private seller.

Toyota trucks are pretty good anyway...and it's a truck, they are more practical for people. No one wants a high performance gas guzzler unless you are independently wealthy.

2003 S600 ; 1999 E55 (sold)
was offered $15K for my 99 E55

True,
dealer recently offered me $15K for my '99 E55 with 57K miles (mostly b/c miles were so low, not to mention installed K40 + dvd).
I passed and put it in the auto trader for $17K. Will let you know how it goes, had a few calls but for some reason each asks about 'gas mileage'.

WTF - any fool googling the car for 5 seconds can get this info, why ask the owner!

This is not a Toyota Yaris bookin' the 40mpg....Clearly there are a lot of people out there that dont understand this is not the car for someone who cares whether gas is $2.50 or $3.50!!!!

Then how come Ferraris don’t drop as much? Could it be because Mercedes’ AMG division has stretched itself so much across the spectrum that has lost its exclusivity? For god’s sake even 500E’s are not as low as these AMG’s. I am not griping. I bought mine used at a bargain price. I am just trying to understand the psyche and logistics behind this. For one, people are letting go of these babies for such a low price to begin with. The dealer that sells them for $15K must have bought them for at least a couple of grands below what he is selling them for. I have no other way but to think that it is MB’s fault by not taking measures for these cars to hold their value a little bit better. Look at the case of W220’s. In the middle of the model year they came up with the 55 Kompresor for the same piece that made the 2001 and 2002 S55’s instant obsoletes. If that’s not betrayal for profit, what else could it be?

'99 E55 AMG
I have come to the conclusion that because of the "lack of awareness" by most consumers, about these AMG speciality cars....the demand is just not there.

I see ad's for E320's going for more than some E55's!

I believe if most consumers knew they could buy a 354 hp Mercedes for around $20k....they would jump all over it. People just do not know what an E55 AMG is...only the most savvy of car enthusiasts who pay attention to BMW's "M" cars, or Audi's "S" line...know what the AMG brand is all about. The general public all have heard about a Honda Accord or a Toyota Camry...ask the average guy or gal to tell you about AMG?

Also...I believe that anyone who is interested in owning one of these (fine) vehicles will ultimately pay 'whatever the market bears'...so I also blame owners of these cars who are listing them for low prices to begin with and when they don't sell quickly (because no one knows what they are) they drop their asking price down even lower and '*****' them away!

There is nothing wrong with these rare, fabulous AMG models of ours....its the "lack of demand" and "lack of awareness" for these (understated) cars that is killing our ability to obtain higher values for them when we want to trade them in or sell them.

It's a combination on all of these things. Mainly, the market is softer than Snuggle dryer sheets. AMG's in all classes can be had on the cheap now. One member wanted a CLS55 for less than 60K, they are out there all day every day at that price. I got all my Benzo's on the cheap.

This listing seems to be bogus though. When I see bad spelling, that's a red flag to me.

These were $200K cars. Now they can be had for about $50K. A 75% loss in value! The way things look, wait a couple of years and they will be $20K!

But the cost of ownership will still be in the stratosphere for the non DIYer.
Sure you can buy for $20K but one repair say airconditioning or transmission could be $5K new owner says ouch, (&**^%@#@!$%%$#$#&^%&*&&) I am unloading this AMG ASAP. It is only a windfall to us gear heads that have limited our dependence on the dealers.

you said it Yacht Master, the cost of ownership is huge. parts are expensive and as soon as the dealer sees AMG I think they markup the labor costs. So if you buy a car for 17K, you still need to pay thousands for maintenance if you want you car to perform like it should.

a yacht just pulled into our Marina called SuRi. it is amazing... Cars are great but Yachts are ridiculous. and since I don't own a yacht, my E55 is awesome! tonight I went out and I love driving it. every time I get behind the wheel it is amazing...

That vessel is what is known as a Yacht Escort Ship or Shadow Boat. It is, (If we are talking about the same vessel 170 footer) the supply/toy hauler for an even larger yacht. These vessels are used to transport guests, crew, provisions, fuel, oil, all sorts of personal water craft, small boats, dive equipment, fishing gear all this to allow the Mother Ship to remain at a very remote location for extended periods.
You guys are lucky I only get to play with my cars may be 40 days a year the rest of the time I am on duty. Guess that is why my 99 E430 has 28K miles.

And today it left.
