Question Engine cut out...

My car had it's annual MOT test (a detailed saftey check legal requirement here in the UK) today.

Firstly I was plesently surprised to find the garage had mistakenly given the car a full oil and filter change (Mobil 1) as they thought it was in for a service. It was their mistake so they didnt charge me for it! Bonus!!

However, whilst up on the ramps ticking over with a probe up the exhaust monitoring the emissions the car cut out and then wouldnt start. Try as we might it didnt want to know. It was turning over but just would'nt fire.

Anyway, after much head scratching and leaving it for ten minutes we tried it again and bingo, it started immediatley.

Any ideas what may have caused this?

My first thought was some kind of immobiliser fault???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, if it's the crank shaft sensor should I worry? What does the sensor sense?

It's been fine since.

Its primary function is to check for bends in crankshaft and cut the engine off to avoid sever engine damage. When it gets old like in case of yours, at high temps it gives a faulty reading which results in engine shut downs.

I spoke too soon. Drove the car today when I parked up for 5 minutes it wouldnt start. Just turns over but doesnt fire.

Left the car for 20 minutes then it was fine.

OK, so if it is the crankshaft sensor, what kinda cost am I looking at???

Oh, and for the record it was supposedly the hottest day of the year today...

Its ~$60 and labor. Usually located on the top of the trans bellhousing on the left side. Can usually see it from the top looking down between rear of engine and firewall.

It reads crank position via the flywheel so the ECU knows when to provide fuel and spark.

OK, I've been quoted £311.00 all done. This is from MercServices in Tooting, London. That sounds a bit steep to me.

How many hours labour would you expect changing this part??
