Unhappy Gearbox worries....

Hi all,

I've noticed that every now and then my gearbox slips (as if a clutch is depressed). The revs rise and then the power comes in with a viscous jolt as it seems to grip again.

Is the gearbox knackered or can it be serviced?

I'm guessing it's not cheap whatever the problem :-(

How many miles do you have? All transmissions can be serviced (or rebuilt) if need be. If you haven't done so recently, change the ATF fluid and filter to see if that helps. That's probably the least expensive procedure you can do to it. Don't believe the MB rubbish that's it's sealed for life.

The car has just done 100k miles.

OK, I'll change the fluid/filter but what if that doesnt work? Has anybody else had a similar problem? If so, what was the remedy?

I had this problem with my C43 and also W210 E300 Turbodiesel. I lived with the problem on the C43 for a couple of years cos it only did it now and again. Seemed to do it more when I was driving it steady for a good couple of weeks and then floor it to overtake a car or race a nutter.
Seemed like the car got confused as all of a sudden I wanted power.
When I reset the ECU it wouldnt do it for a couple of months.

My E55 never does it. Mayve it is cos I reset the ECU quite often.
I have a diagnostic machine that will read all codes and clear them. It will even test the transmission while moving.

OK, I'll give the ECU a reset and see what happens. Just out of interest, how often do you reset it and does it really need reseting regularly??

Resetting it is not a fix. That will only trick the transmission into thinking this is normal till it catches on that the tranny is starting to go.

Can I barge in with a side question? How do I reset the ecu? I have an '01.

Also, I'm at 77k - ATF change?

TIA

Well the reset seems to have helped but I'm still not that confident that it's cured it...

If the 'tranny' is starting to go:

Is it a special AMG box or is it the same found on other Mercs?
What kind of cost are we looking at?
Would a gearbox service fix it?

Just a FYI
Here in the states we are seeing more after market tuners offering up graded transmissions for E55s 210 & 211 with a good core the costs run around $4500 USD.

No real news as yet. Still, it has 'slipped' just once over the last week or so. The ECU reset seemed to help although that may just be the better throttle response it seemed to create.

Gonna just wait and see. If it gets really bad then I'll get something done.

Do you ever drive up north?
If so I can plug it into my machine and see what faults it comes up with.

Let me know

What its doing is not normal. It will just get worse and worse. Mine did the same thing I took it into my indy and he replaced the defective parts for 1100 EUR Labor and all. A new Gearbox would have been 3500+

Is the gearbox on the E55 a weakness?, the reason why i ask is because i understand the Jaguar XJR uses the same gearbox and the amount of troubles Jag owners seems to have with these gearboxes is alarming, something to do with the gearbox not being able to handle the torque other than that would i be right in saying the E55 seems to be a trouble free car.
