E55 FRONT GRILL

hi guys have you noticed the front grill on our car. when i checkd it i discovered that there was a certain are of the grill which is blocking the air to go directly to the intake tubes.. any one have thought of cutting the plastic area so the air can directly go into the intake tubes making it a more RAM AIR effect? thanks

Hmmmm never noticed, but it might be there for a reason - perhaps to minimize rain water from going directly into the intake?

Yes, You can cut off the 4" tab thats blocking it for more airflow. It may help alittle bit but its not going to give you anything measured on a dyno anything. Its more for blocking sound than anything else.

No, the technical term for them is "water ingestion baffle". Its for in case you are stupid enough to drive through heavy water. The airbox is so high and its so far offset to the sides that rain will never get in there, you can cut them if you please, many do.

No, not even close. The stock intake is designed so that the air goes upward so its impossible for water to defy gravity, go up, and then into the airbox. Feel free to go ahead and do it.

My question is why would you be driving 100 mph in the rain?

i used it only as an example so we can tell if its safe to do. and also why did they make the intake to be like that? is there a reason for the cover on the paseenger side intake? did they do it to balance the flow of air on the two intake pipes? because the driverside intake is morerestricted and has small opening?

AMS: yup but if the throttle is open and sucking air their could be a chance for waterto be suck into the motor? thanks

No, If you are in 4 feet of water, the intake is your least but of concern lol.

Well in all reality if you put water on a ramp and have air rushing up it. It's going to push the water up the ramp. So same with the intake tubes if you were to have water enter them and driving with a 40mph-however fast you drive air rushing into them.

If you were scared to do it you could always drill holes thru the plastic rather then cut it all the way out. I've see also where some will wrap the end of the intake tubes with screen from a window like on turbos so that water could not directly feed into the tubes. But anyways I guess it's all up to the person.
