Loud ticking noise from engine??
There is a loud ticking noise coming from the passenger side of the engine. I'm not sure what it could be but it just doesn't seem right. I don't have much more info on it that I can add except that. 84k brand new spark plugs and wires. Any ideas on where to start looking?

Ticking sound on an engine is usually the lifters. I don't think a 5.5 motor with 84k miles should not have any lifter problems, unless it's been driven into the ground (probably not the case). Is the noise more noticable when you first turn the car on, when the car is cold?

It was noticable after the car had been running for a while. The car was at operating temp and it was still pretty loud. Didn't notice it when I first started it but i'm sure it was happenieng then too. This was a test drive for an e55 I'm looking into buying. Not sure what to do about it..

Highly recommend you have a MBZ shop take a look at it. Dosn't have to be a stealership, a local guy is fine. With a 5.5 motor, out of warranty (i'm guessing), and 84k miles, you may be buying a world of pain.

Loud ticking noise from engine??
That was my car pointed to in the link of the previous post. Long story. In the end, the dealer's technician said it was the oil squirt tube dislodged and hanging down in the wrong position. BS? Maybe, but the ticking (from the passenger side of the engine, BTW) has disappeared. Apparently the tube is attached to the valve cover or something...the explanation was vague. If it was in fact nothing more than the squirt tube out of position, then the oversight by the technician cost the delarship an unnecessary, and expensive (under warranty) valve job....which might explain the mumbled explanation. But it is quiet now and running smooth ever since.

the noise you are hearing could be from a sticky lifter or worn camshaft lobe. usual cause could be lack of oil changes. take a look at the oil filler cap for engine sludge in the valve train. i am a tech at a benz dealer in so cal and have seen it a couple times.

p/s pumps dont really tick, they make more of a whining sound and its not normal. noise from your pump means there is air in the system, maybe leak or just low fluid level.

Noisy E55 Engine
Good Morning everyone,
I was wondering about the same thing, my E55 is a little louder than usual...There's a slight ticking but what also sounds like a quiter deisel engine. Someone please help me with this...I understand that I have 72000 miles but it still shouldn't be this loud...

there's one other tick but on driver's side just for reference if anyone has that, it's one of the tank evap valves that's located right by the throttle cable (driver's side)...sounds like a diesel at idle you can put your hand on it and even feel it...replace and back to normal...

The most common simple solution is adding 0.5-1.0 quart of Rislone engine treatment to your oil and this will usually clear up any sticky lifters problems you may have. BMW guys have been using it for a long time and they normally will get the lifters to quiet down significantly. Its a good quick fix for mild to moderate cases. If the lifters are totally toast then it may require repair.
