Abuse of AMG

ok, I just got back from lunch. While at the post office, I saw a black e-class that simply had AMG on the right side of the trunk. Clearly, this was not an AMG car, it looked like a E320 to me. It did however have AMG wheels on it. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me.

What is the deal with putting that badge on? I must say it disgusted me, I would never, ever even think of putting on an AMG badge unless I had a REAL AMG, not a car I outfitted with some AMG wheels, trim pieces, etc.

This topic has been beat down, buried, dug up again, shot and stabbed, buried, and dug up AGAIN. Rinse and repeat a million times.

If you buy (or lease!) a car, you can do whatever you want with it. Just like you, as an observer, can hate or love his car.

The more important question is, why does it bother you so much?

What about Brabus, lorinser and Carlsson? Its so common to see a badge on the trunk of a benz which represents nothing, just a body kit or just some rims. How many of these fully equipped tuner cars rome the streets? only a handful, unlike AMG vehicles which now rule the performance sedan category. At least AMG stands for something and not nothing.

Well it has been discussed before "What justifies the AMG badge"
If he has the wheels, can he wear the AMG badge? Or does he need engine, suspension, body kit, etc???

One thing is for sure, if it is a 320 and gets into a race with a rice burner and gets his *** kicked AMG gets a bad reputation thanks to him

It's simple - If you put in a $40 K&N Filter you can put on the K&N sticker. If you have AMG Wheels or Body Kit or Muffler you can put on the AMG badge. Those with non AMG cars and badges are AMG fans & enthusiast also.

Only get ticked if the guy rebadges his E320 to E55.

AMG is AMG!

For me, it's more than 3 letters.

It's an AMG powerplant, suspension, brakes, exhaust...and then the cosmetic - 3 letters: AMG

The "whole" is more than the sum of it's parts!

..........Actually, this makes the most sense of everything I have read and heard about this topic including things that I too have said. Basically, since AMG sells accessories to everyone, but does not sell engines to everyone on the open market, the more restrictive naming should apply to the engine. So, seeing an AMG badge on a car means something different compared to seeing E55, Sl55, CLK 55 etc. This will allow people to purchase accessories for there car and adorne them tastefully or distastefully as they wish, yet allow some distinction from cars that have AMG engines. Also will serve as mental chill pill for those who get really bent out of shape about seeing AMG logo on cars without an AMG engine.

I have almost gotten used to the fact that "what you see is not always what you get". Here is the Image Capital of the World, sunny So. Cal., rebadging your car is like going to Starbucks for coffee, everyone is doing it!!! The part that really bothers me is that we just sold an '03 S500 Sport to a very well known action movie star and he wanted the badging on the decklid taken off and the the V12 emblems added to the front fender. This, from a person who can clearly afford to by the real thing, but yet he has to pretend and make everyone think he has the S600. This really confuses me to the point that is boggles my mind!!!

What ever makes these guys happy...
We all know that LA is very pretentious city and values are a bit different here.
As for myself I debagged my E55 on delivery, just wanted the car to look as stealth as possible.
People who know will recognize E55 and clueless ones probably don't know what E55 is.

FWIW according to the AMG USA webFAQ

Question
Where can I get AMG badges to put on my C230 (or any other lower line car) to make it look like I have a real AMG?
Answer
AMG badges alone will not convince car enthusiasts that a vehicle was built by AMG. True AMG vehicles are easily recognizable through their intake and exhaust systems and their AMG-developed aerodynamic bodywork and alloy wheels. Owners who need to replace their AMG badge can obtain one as a spare part through their Mercedes-Benz dealership
