1999 E55 "For Sale"

Hey guys,

I was considering selling my car. Times are getting tough for me. I have an X pipe with Magnaflow with resonator deleted and custom tips. Sounds great! I also have the Powerchip,Sprint Booster, and K&N filters. Also lowered with H & R springs. I am the 2nd owner. It's Black on Black with Chrome monoblocks. Runs perfect! Looks clean! Just under 100,000 miles. I am asking 15,000 OBO.

I've got an '00 with 53k miles, FSDs, H&Rs, AMS Shorty Headers, BMG Filters, Sprint Booster, Power Chip and X-pipe with resonator deleted and I'd probably be lucky to get $15k for it (and would consider taking it too), but I keep seeing how hard it is for folks to sell their W210 E55s for anything decent so I'm driving mine 'til at least 2013, then I won't care too much what I get for her. Hope that provides some perspective.

Unfortunately, his went at market value. People just aren't buying them right now, and insurance is too much for the kids to get into them.

I'm curious, is the price you suggested based on the mileage, year, or both?

So say there is an 01 with the same mileage, is the price range the same?

Anyone else please chime in too!

Probably based on mileage, year, and the biggest factor, demand. Simply put, repair and insurance prices have a huge affect on the people that buy 15-20k cars. This drives demand down as well as the price.

Funny... my insurance for the E55 is $600 per year lower than it was with my old M3. My fuel bill will more than compensate for that difference though.

Good luck with the sale... looks like a clean car. If you have a clean one, the right buyer will come along. It's just a matter of time.

You're comparing relative to another high end performance car. Think about it: Most people buying 10-20k cars are not people that normally drive M3's. Most people that buy 10-20k cars are used to driving a Honda, Toyota, or even at the top end, a WRX or Evo. As these cars come down in price, it opens them up for younger, arguably less financially stable people.

Despite being 10-20k, these are not 35k cars to repair. They are 70-75k cars to repair, have a lot of hp and torque for their price, and are generally a lot more to insure than the cars mentioned above.

Most W210's are now 9 model years old and have close to or above 100k miles. Combine this with the insurance, repair, and maintenance costs, and most people won't touch them with a stick. This drives the demand down, thus driving down the market value.

You're right, but, the fact that I'm comparing it shows you there IS a market out there for these types of cars. We're educated enthusiast buyers, and we want a good deal - but we're willing to stretch the budget for the right car.

"Most people" is again accurate, but, there are ways to target the enthusiast market, by advertising on the right websites (MBWorld and the other Merc forums are a good place to start) - it's just a matter of the timing of it all. The right buyer is out there... but only if it's priced right.

Exactly right... there isn't a big market for them, but there is an enthusiast market, for the "right price". What I'm saying is that there isn't much of a market outside of the enthusiasts, and even then, it has to be priced right and be in the right condition for an enthusiast.

There aren't enough enthusiasts out there willing to take on the W210 AMG right now and that's a big contributing factor to the low price. The going rate for these cars is well below 20% of their original value and doesn't appear to be leveling off anytime soon. Example: Peter's car went for $15k with probably that or more in mods alone in the last 2 years.

I can chime in with my recent purchase experience as well. I bought my 2001 with 29k miles on it back in July, and probably paid about $2k to $3k over what a similarly equipped one would be with more miles (most I found had around 60k miles).

It's all down to the buyer though. Try and get the best car you can for your money, and don't look back. You'll love the car!

Since people are chiming in with pricing, I bought my 02 with about 120K miles w/ Nav for $11,400 in September I think. I don't remember exactly anymore, but the timing and price are about right. Anyway, yes, this car has a lot of miles but the car was in great condition and the owner took great care of it and had already done pretty much all the maintenance possible. All I had to do was take possession and drive. Oh, well of course put on high flow cats and x-pipe too.

I bought my '99 in Dec for $17,500. I paid top dollar but the car is a pristine 1 owner with 15k miles and a perfect original interior

As to a nice 100k mile car - if that was what I had been looking for, $12k range.

FWIW......I have a 2002 with 140k on it and I'm asking 9g's. It has nav, all options including like new two tone interior, silver exterior. I have not listed it yet, but I figure it will go quick for that $.
