I thought that too but I doubt tires would make the clunking the rear tire did to me this morning only at 30mph./
i've also had numerous sets of tires and wheels on the car and the vibration is the same

Vibration Problems In Rear Of My Clk500
I have a 03 clk 500 with 130k miles and I just resently start feeling a Vibration in the rear of my car.. The Car Still Drives Sooo Smooth up to 45mph then i get a mild Vibration and as I acelerate the vibration worst and when it gets up to around 70mph i feel like I'm in a washer machine.. ;o( So far I have Balanced all tires to 0 had 2 linements and replaced both rear tires..and Still the same Vibration

Hi everyone, I am new to the group.
My 2001 E320 sedan/base which I just bought, have the humming noise coming from the back of the car, could it be the wheel bearings? Are there any bearings involved on both side of the differential where the axles go? If there are how would you differentiate whether it is the inner(differential side) or outer (wheel side) bearings are making the noise? I also feel a slight vibration but nothing significant. Also the humming noise gets worse at increased speeds.

Did you ever get the problem fixed? I have an 04 CLK55amg with similar vibration. All is good until I hit 60-65mph and stays the same if I shift to neutral while at same mph. I'm going to check alignment first but since I recently purchased the car I don't have good history to trace when it first started. My left rear tire is worn but I can't imagine this will respond that way.

Check to ensure that there is no corrosion between face of rotor and wheel causing slight offset on wheel mounting. Clean off corrosion if found and remount.

No activity lately, but I have had a vibrations throughout the car that I have improved by replacing many parts. I first started noticing at some point over 100k miles. The rear was sagging and the tires would wear on the inside (camber was off). I replaced the lower control arm outer bushing and rear (actually front and rear) shocks. This fixed the camber problem and I believe the shocks (gas charged) brought the car back up to spec.
Since then I have replaced engine and transmission mounts. The car is quieter at idle and I feel less vibration when driving.
Replaced front and rear flex disks. I had some vibration as approximately 60mph that was reduced, but not eliminated. Looking to replace center driveshaft bearing and support. Also inspect transmission output bearing, bushing(?) and seal.
Lastly I have a set of rear suspension control arms from FCP in the garage to install. Still need to purchase triple square (12 point torx-like bit) to remove and replace. These all have rubber coupling points that most likely are deteriorating after time and miles on vehicle.

Has anyone had problems with the drive shaft center bearing? Or the transmission output shaft bushing? Or maybe the Flex Discs?
If so what were the symptoms that you had with the car?

I just wanted to add my own experiences with my 2000 E430, I had to replace the rear lower/outer ball joints (the ones that start squeaking like an old mattress) and in the process, obviously the rear axle shafts must be removed. So, I checked the CV joints for play or binding, and WHOA the right outer joint was stiff as can be, almost to the point of feeling like it was locking up! It was so bad in fact, that I looked into getting new axles entirely, but they seem to be an uncommon replacement part on these cars, and as such are very $$. So, I did the next best thing and opened up the joint, cleaned all the OLD grease out (it was in terrible shape) and replaced it with new moly grease. This helped w/ vibrations considerably, and I would look into this on any car with a vibration that seems to be coming from the rear half of the car. I also noticed that not a single person suggested this part as a possible cause in this thread!!
My 2000 E430 is garage kept, and has about 129k miles on it.
