Bulb out warning, but cannot find bad bulb

Hello,

2001 E55 - I have a bulb out warning, but I do not see any exterior bulbs that are not burning or are even dim. It has been this way ever since I bought the car last year. One of the fog lamps was out so I replaced the bulb, but that did not slove the problem. Warning comes on as soon as I switch on the lights.

Any suggestions?

what kind of lights do you have in the front side markers?
do you have the stock orange markers?
all i can think of previous owner took lights out maybe and got clears/smoked markers w/out putting a resistor inline.

other than that, try disconnecting battery for a few minutes then reconnecting, it might reset it if indeed there's no lights that are out.

When i bought my e55 .. the previous owner explained to me that the car gets a bulb out warning even though they are intact .. On my car specifically my passeger side taillight bulb was the culprit .. I would get the message .. pop the tailight bulb in n out and that would reset it .. maybe try them out and hopefully works for you ..

I have the same issue, I think it's one of my rears that has a bad connection because it doesn't do it all the time.

It does happen occasionally when I hit the brakes

Check the license plate and the ash trade bulb.

On a BMW I used to own that was caused by bulbs not being exactly matched (ie: different brands side to side in sets) and drawing slightly different amounts of current.
Good luck.

Thumbs up

Just so everyone knows, it's most likely your lights in the taillights, probably not making good contact with the bulb socket. (you can slightly bend the metal piece that makes contact with the rest of the backplate of the lights)

*Also have a friend step on the brake to double check

I have this problem before. But my mechanic soldier an additional wire between the brake light metal plate. The reason is the resistance is too high and adding an additional wire between them to reduce the resistance and will fix the warning light problem. This works for me and the problem disappear for 2 years from now.
