Do they salvage cars for blown motors
I have never heard of a care getting salvaged if the motor gets blown:

Warranties cover product defects.
Nothing covers mechanical damage due to negligence or abuse.
This story makes no sense. If the car was replaced with a used motor (he notes the motor had 7k less miles than the original, sounds like it's used) then it wasn't done by Mercedes Benz (they would only use new parts) under warranty. And an insurance company wouldn't total a car or even file a claim because you blew an engine. That's not covered. Unless it was somehow stolen and the thief blew the motor.
It sounds like this car has blown a motor (very hard to do), been neglected (no antifreeze), and been in a serious accident (totaled). I would get it inspected and stay away unless you get a screaming deal (maybe $7k to $8k if it checks out mechanically).
I am not apposed to buying a salvaged car but it would have to look really good and get checked out and be 50% less than a clean titled one.
Everyone has a story as to why it was salvaged.
