I have never heard of a care getting salvaged if the motor gets blown:

it's certainly possible for a car to get totaled by a blown motor, but I'd be surprised if that's what happened to this car. The current seller bought it 6/40K ago, which puts it at around 2 years old with 34K. I'm pretty sure that in 2004, a 2 year old W210 E55 with only 34K (or less) would be worth much more than enough to avoid being totaled due to the costs of an engine replacement.

Insurance covers accidents, theft, things like that.
Warranties cover product defects.
Nothing covers mechanical damage due to negligence or abuse.
This story makes no sense. If the car was replaced with a used motor (he notes the motor had 7k less miles than the original, sounds like it's used) then it wasn't done by Mercedes Benz (they would only use new parts) under warranty. And an insurance company wouldn't total a car or even file a claim because you blew an engine. That's not covered. Unless it was somehow stolen and the thief blew the motor.
It sounds like this car has blown a motor (very hard to do), been neglected (no antifreeze), and been in a serious accident (totaled). I would get it inspected and stay away unless you get a screaming deal (maybe $7k to $8k if it checks out mechanically).

I have zero interest in the car. I just wonder if salvaged how he thinks he can get market price for the car? I would assume at best he would get about 50% of KBB value unless he gets a sucker.
I am not apposed to buying a salvaged car but it would have to look really good and get checked out and be 50% less than a clean titled one.
Everyone has a story as to why it was salvaged.

I was browsing ebay and was wondering the same thing when I came across that car.

Maybe it was in a flood and they tried to start it or something and locked up the motor. Therefore salvaged title and no motor. LOL
flood damage sounds very likely. No structure damage to vehicle but motor fried along with electrical and such. Anyways like I said it will be a tough sell for him. I would be interested at like $5000.
