any difference between a '99 and '02 E55?

Many. The '00 received new bumpers, manually shiftable automatic transmission, steering wheel radio controls, a new dashboard (less likely to crack) and a lot of other changes.

Some people say that the '02 is faster than all other years. I don't know why this would be, because I don't think there are any relevant part number changes (like a new intake or exhaust or cams). Perhaps different tuning?

according to MB there was roughly 200 changes ... ALOT was changed.... if you are in the market look for 00-02, very few changes between 00-02 other than OEM nav and one or two other minor things .... 99 E55s have more in common with older E50 than they do with newer E55s, its like a hybrid of the two cars essentially (a half way point).
