Burning oil?
My check oil light keeps coming on and i keep having to add oil. I had some minor oil leaks from my valve covers so i changed the gaskets. the light still keeps coming on i check the oil and its low so i add oil i have no other leaks. I noticed that my rear bumper where the AMG tips come out gets dirty not black but dirty and u can notice it my question is am i burning oil through the rings (98K miles) or could it be something else such as valve guide seals? I dont drive the car really hard but i do get on the gas more than a little. the oil is mobile 1 5w-30 MB i think def. not the 0-40 euro. so my question is should i just use heavier oil or should i do something else and what could it be? My car definitely doesn't have any issues getting up and going so i dont think its a piston ring issue. I value your fed back thanks

MB does not recommend 5w-30 for AMG vehicles. You should definitely switch to 0w-40 or 5w-40. Small amounts on oil consumption can be normal. Have you checked your oil using the dipstick? There's a chance that the sensor may be malfunctioning.

You gave two options above which one is recommended?
Thanks!
To OP - sounds like a bad oil sensor, I would start there (check your oil every 1k) I know I do-

Mobil 1 0W40 is basically the only oil to use on the AMG motor. Anything else that's compliant is likely to cost more, so why bother. Mobil 1 5W40 is for diesel motors. Mobil 1 5W30 is inferior oil and should not be used either. The temperature/season where you live is irrelevant here, as well. Alaska or Texas, winter or summer, use 0W40.
Does the car smoke under acceleration or when starting? How often do you add oil, and how much? When the computer says to add oil, have you checked the dipstick to verify?

I always check the diptsick also and it says its low. My car smokes a tiny bit and black soot builds up on my bumper where the tips come out. My uncle works for benz and gave me the 5w-30 oil and said its the new oil mercedes recommended it even says mobile MB= mercedes benz
