W210 Airbox mods - pics
Did the K&N filters this weekend and the airbox thermofoiling. See photo of bottom of airbox. This was a snap and took around 1-1/2 hours.

Oh, yeah, she runs ...
Thanks for the compliment - the self-adhesive thermafoil (2 sheets used, $50) made it pretty easy to do a neat job, as did fitting one side and tracing it backwards onto another sheet (thumbnail) to speed things up. The airbox is not *quite* symmetrical, though.
I guess the ECU must have adjusted for airflow on its own because after driving it for an hour or so I did notice a significant difference. It seems smoother and idles better too.

Hello guys,
I know Pocholin had explained the purpose of this modification before but can someone give a explanation again. Also what is the instruction/ procedure in doing this modification. Thanks in advance.

I did this too but I didn't have enough to cover the top with two sheets--my airbox seems to be bigger than the one in the picture. It does seem to help but the top gets very hot as well and it seems to me this must be heating up the air that comes in as well. Should I cover the top? Additionally, I think it might look ugly with the top covered, any suggestions? Or any ideas on where to get a carbon-fiber airbox? Would this work better?

I would use caution with the K&N. Hold one up to the light, they look like a screen door. They flow more air, but also flow more dirt. Silica is what gets through, and silica is what wears out your engine. On a dyno, there is zero difference with a K&N. Their horsepower claims are over a clogged air filter. The fact that your time improved is probably from a better launch.
In the modified diesel truck world, where you have to flow volumes more air than an E55, nobody with a brain would use a K&N. If you want to modify your filter, you may try a Amsoil air filter.

I've done this mod, too and also used the adhesive wrap to wrap my intake tubes. You can especially feel the difference on hot days. :0)
