Aftermarket Head unit?
What you installed?
Pictures?
I am new owner of my 2002 E55 and thinking about replacement of my headunit. Previous owner put Alpine flip out CD/DVD unit, but I do not like it. When playing it blocks climate controls, besides it is became glitchy. Instead of tinkering with it I just want to put new one. Looking for inspirations, so to speak, hence that post. The rest of the audio system is already done before I got it, it is JL Audio all around! Originally the car had single DIN unit, not COMAND.

Just swap the climate control to where the stereo is and vice versa. Shouldn't take you more than a few minutes. There are many other units with flip out screens that are great. Look into Pioneer and Clarion for great units with bluetooth, nav, and sat radio.

BlownV8, yes, I am going to lower climate control unit and move audio up. For flip out it's still going to block controls above and air vents. I decided in single DIN, without flip out. Just ordered Kenwood Excelon KDC-X995
I do not like most flip out UP and all respectful head unit manufacturers are on that trend. I see a lot of BOSS and their clones have flip out DOWN layout, which I like ,but unfortunately, all of them are lower quality.
In future, I have idea to move head unit even lover, just above ash tray section and "unify" head unit and climate control into one big opening and use it for double DIN unit with GPS or even install display for car computer which will consolidate everything, like Bluetooth, GPS, Music with different compressions and whatever I can dream more, MINUS Video.

Steering control
From what I gathered, there are adapter/interface units which translate steering control signals to whatever what is understood by head unit. I ordered one for myself, will see how it will function.

There are a variety of steering wheel and Canbus interface options. The W203 C class guys seem to have played with these more. You can apparently find OEM type interfaces for the Becker and/or Blaupunkt systems, and aftermarket for the Pioneer AVIC and others.
