Thumbs up 1999 E55 AMG 30K miles for $38000

I drove this one at Sandovals autocenter. It was nice. Sounds like a good deal. I know the miles are a tick over 30K now and the car will sell for $38K if you bring your checkbook. I just prefer a stick in a high performance car. Can't believe they make those in an automatic.

For a '99??? $35k sounds more like it... $38k is dreaming unless they get an unwitting sucker in. '01s are barely moving in the mid-forties with less mileage than that and they have the updated cosmetics as well as the newer instrument cluster.

Every dealer I found with the same car had a 99 listed for 40-$52K with up to 95K miles on them. No offense pal but you don't know the value of this car. Go to autotrader.com put in 1999 E55 with no price limites and find just 1 E55 with 30K miles or less for less than $38000. The only one listed for less (29K) has the 95K miles on it. Not even privately can you get that deal. Seems like the dealer was motivated to sell it. I know if I offered $37K I would have got it.

Show me one E55 with less than 30K miles for $35K and I'll buy it.

*LOL* Autotrader??? That's your benchmark for a car's value??? You mean that wonderful mix of dealers advertising used cars at closer to their new price and Eastern European scam artists offering to fly your new-to-you BMW/Mercedes/Whatever (that, of course, is priced $10k below the market) over in it's very own cargo plane BEFORE they collect the money so you can inspect it? All for a "small" deposit of 10-15%? Yeah, THAT autotrader.

KBB and Edmunds can post whatever they like, the used car market is SOFT. Combine that with the fact that there's brand new unregistered '02 E55s floating around going for $55k, the recent bodystyle change, and the fact that the '99 doesn't have the updated instrument cluster nor the front fascia and that diminishes it's value no matter what the mileage. The dealer can put whatever price they want on the car; it'll sit there until either someone who doesn't know better comes along or they get hammered on the price and come down enough to sell it. They can stick the window sticker back on there and try to sell it at MSRP but I don't think they'd have much luck.

Poch, you ain't the only one.... I REALLY hated it when I traded my wife's on the new E500.... I tried selling it privately, via Ebay... no luck. In the end the dealer offer was better than I could get anywhere else which is almost NEVER the case. Turns out I found out about a brand new one that sold for just $7k more than I got on trade-in and the one I traded was an '02 with 26k miles on it so I didn't feel so bad.

You're way off base dude. The value of the W210 E55 plummetted when the talk of the supercharged V8 began. I think Kaneman is right on the money. Ebay sales prices, not reserve prices are accurate guides to what a car will bring nowadays. Autotrader asking prices are very inflated as are KBB, NADA, and Edmunds prices. Dealers can ask high dollars for these "niche vehicles", but if they want to move the vehicle, they have to really deal. I wouldn't offer this dealer 1 penny over 35,000 dollars and wait for him to call you back, because there are very few buyers in the market for this car. Check out this thread about the 99 E55 that AMGWannabe bought. He definitely got a good deal.

Real world example?

Kaneman,

I was curious about the statement that you made in an earlier message where you stated, "Combine that with the fact that there's brand new unregistered '02 E55s floating around going for $55k". I certainly would be interested in getting first hand data from you where this opportunity exists.

I hope you are making this statement from actual firsthand knowledge rather than just making generalizations. Last I checked, I could not find any "untitled" '02 E55 (which are not demos) any where in the nation, let alone getting it for $55K.

Please forward the appropriate information at your earliest convenience.

Thanks,

No it's not. Ebay is at the other end of the spectrum. Sure you can get a great deal there, but your average car buyer does not purchase from Ebay.

Kelly Blue Book has long been the standard. But the world has been so crazy ever since 9-11, it's really hard to peg the high end used car market.

Anyway, I think I'll never sell my E55, love it too much. I'll just keep driving it for as long as it will last.

Guys, I live in fairfield county CT. Sorry to say but in CT,NY,NJ there is Not 1, I repeat NOT 1 99, E55 anywhere near $35K. So I searched the web, cars.com, autotrader.com. autobytel.com, etc etc. around the country and I still cannot find 1 E55 amg with less than 30K miles on it for a price of anything less than $37K. In fact if someone shows me 1 ad for a E55 with under 30k miles on it for $35K, I'LL BUY IT! $37K for that car is a good deal, it really is. I can buy one for $29K but who wants 75K or 95K miles on it?

I just drove home my 99 with 56K on it, now 58k. The dealer offered my buddy $28 on a trade in. I bought it for $31 to make up for the sales tax. I have seen them for as low as $35-37.
Let's be serious here, dealers have to be making a killing if they are paying 28 and selling for 35+.

Getting back to my main point here. The car they have at http://www.sandovalsautocenter.com in Darien CT.

Black on black 99 E55 AMG, 30,039 miles, for $37K. Is that not a good deal? Can anyone find me a 99 E55 with the same miles from a dealer or privately for less?

Yes I have personal knowledge of the E55s that went for mid-$50k prices. No, I'm not about to release details as I'm not inclined to possibly screw my source over for your edification.

Regarding that E55 at Sandoval's being a good deal or not... it's subjective. Do you love the car? Is it in incredible condition? Have you had it inspected for paintwork/body damage/mechanical condition? If it's an utterly pristine car despite the mileage it isn't a HORRIBLE deal at $37k but it certainly ain't a bargain. If there's anything wrong with it, it's not a bargain at $27k, much less $37. Were it me, I'd spend a few $$$ more and get a post-2000 car with less mileage. It's not as though there's a shortage of them. Even the mighty M5 has come WAY down in value, especially the '00 models. Can I find you one for less? Sure! But it'd cost you more than you'd save, my time ain't cheap.

Let me reiterate. The used market is very soft. Cars are not moving off the lots. I'd be surprised if you offered $35,000 cash for that '99 that the dealer doesn't first say no to the deal and then call you back a week later and give it to you for that price. I personally have seen 2002 cars with 5000 miles or less going for $58,000 or less. Antse55 got a leftover 2002 for $59,500. ShaneB paid $54,000 for a 2002 with 12,000 miles. Tboombozz paid $56,000 for a 2002 with 12,000 miles and full warranty. Check out these other recent sales:

Your right about the market being soft in general, but here in fairfield county, they just dont care. I guess they let the cars sit. There is no such thing about a cheap mercedes or BMW. Its odd because they are ever other car. I searched a 200 mile radus and for a decent 2000 E55 I need to spend $48K. Thats why that 99 is a pretty good bargain. I like the car but I hate automatics and I prefer 2 doors in high performace. Hate to admit it but it looks like an 02 Z06 is going to be the winner here. Nothing like 0-60 in 3.6 seconds for $38K.

The Z06 is undoubtedly the most perfomance for the money available right now. The LS6 engine is extremely reliable and proven. The car is awesome but for most of us it would only be possible as a second car due to the family. Whatever your decision, I'm sure you'll be cruising in style.

It will only come out on the weekends. Have a midsize SUV as a daily driver now.

Palm Beach Mercedes has a "Demo" '02 E55 with about 2,000 miles that has been sitting thier along time...they still have the $72k sticker on there and it's a joke. I would imagine a deal could be had on that car...

Dr Chill is dead-on... Last month I tried my luck with an '02 with low miles [8,000, if I recall] in Fairfax [local trade; very clean car] - it was already sold - in less than a week, for full asking: just under $59k. Had a friend check out the '02 demo at Beck Imports in Charlotte - they wouldn't look twice at my check for $56k [my limit for any car...].

As a result of this, and the action that Dr Chill references above, I took down an '01 with less than 6,000 miles for under $54k - full options [except for ventilated seats]. Car is showroom perfect, warranty through 5/05... I'd say the car was "fairly priced" given the active looking/negotiating I've done over the past 3 months.

FYI, it's alabaster white/ two-tone charcoal interior with grey - not a blemish on the car, inside or out.

Question: I was having lunch in McLean this afternoon - anybody out there with a silver e55 at J.Gilberts today? fuzzy dice hanging from the rear-view mirror?... nice car!

Thanks to all for the insightful commentary over the past several months. This forum definitely helped me to make an informed decision.

That black car has 6000 miles on it and is nice. I went to test drive it 1 month ago but when I turned the key, the battery was dead. My friend with me offered $56,000 for the car knowing it had been sitting there for a few months. The sales manager, who is a personal friend, spoke to the owner of the dealership and they would not let the car go for less than $60,000 because they said they had $64k in the car. But that was a month ago. The market for such a car in this area is very unpredictable; it is very possible someone with excess cash will walk in and pay over $60,000 for this car and think they stole it since the sticker says $75,000.

I don't see that car going anywhere Most people into AMG know what the market is...and that car isn't going to go for 60K...
