Where to start? The Italians or the Germans?
Got an '02 on the way

Hey all,

Just bought a 2002 E55 at auction for $9k. Silver over black with chrome (bleck) AMG three piece wheels. Found the car on Manheim luckily as their $13k list price was way overpriced considering it was crashed in '07. If the link doesn't work search "Rochellas Auto Service New Jersey" 2002 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E55 AMG For Sale In STATEN ISLAND NY 10303 - Rochella's Auto Services Inc.

The car will see some heavy track usage--as all my cars do. I am contemplating what to do with it now. I think the RENNtech ecu/intake package, LSD, headers, and some exhaust will work for the time being. Also the KW V2 coilovers. H&R's work great for street cars, but with any track time the KW's are the way to go. What would you guys do? I honestly know nothing about these cars except it's around 350hp, 3800lbs, and supposedly pretty fun. Any oddities I should take care of before I go romping around in it?

All the best,
Ricky

E 63S Wagon Renntech, E55 Renntech, SL65, SL 55 030, ML, bunch of old ones--they come, they go...
I had been watching that car...

On OVE, but the seller scared me a bit. Did you get a post?
As far as what to watch out for, mostly just regular 210 stuff--rust, windows, maf sensor, instrument cluster, and..rust. I havent used kw stuff on a 210, but would like to know how thru look and ride...

Looks good - make certain transmision fluid is fresh and check the spring perch on each corner, before hitting the track.

How much would you give me for them? I'll dismount the tires and send them to you. I am putting Enkei's on it. Let me clean up the wheels and get some pictures to you.

I'm changing all the fluids Probably run Agip 20w50 iRide, Motul RBF660 brake fluid, Motul Dexron III ATF, and Agip coolant. Thanks for the reminder about the perches. I am going to pull off the wheels now and see what surprises await.... Wish me luck!

First off...Congratulations on your purchase!!! Good choice

Get a Renntech airbox if not some k&n for the air intake. Exhaust wise headers if you want, 2nd cat delete with a x-pipe and resonator replace with mandrel bends and you are good for the drag times

Maybe a lighter aluminuim pulley and an ecu tune......

Other then that, normal maintence stuff like fluid change.....engine and transmission fluid change. Brake inspection..etc.

These cars have regular springs and not air suspension like the W211 hence stiffer springs like H&R is best with them. You dont need the KW V2 coilovers....dont need to put more weight on the car if you dont need to. You can get a set of H&R new here on this forum for $260 shipped.

Other then that, its mainly cosmetics....silver sidemarkers and some HID and some wheels....enjoy

I use my car as a daily driver hence do not over mod the car for track.

Most people run 0w40 Mobil 1 and/or the dealers mostly use 5w40 Mobil 1 on these motors. I have read quite a few articles and the bottom line is AMG recommends using 0w40 for the 113 series motors. If you go to AMG Private Lounge Website they have an excellent forum and some very smart posters there - add the AMG staff is also posting and it is a strong source of technical information for our cars. Cannot comment on the rest of the fluids you are using, but I will say Merc Motors are very particular to the fluids you use - before you start using fluids you may have used successfully on other cars - you may want to make certain that the fluids you are using are compatible with the w210 E55. I do know that the Merc Coolant is made especially for the Alum block used on these cars, some coolants do not work well with our engine blocks - if you have already done your research I applogize for being redundant - just want to make certain you are covered.

I think it needs to be lowered by about 1.5 inch and have the Enkeis painted gloss black. I am just not feeling the silver on silver look..... Suggestions? I should mention those are R compound DOT slicks (IE they are not supposed to have tread, so please don't tell me my tires look bald) Lol.

Have you dyno'd your car with the mods?

Matte black is a good idea... I've got a couple sets of matte black BMW wheels I might jack the car up and just see what they look like.

Let me think about it. Those would be great to burn up on the drag strip. Thanks!

Sorry but..

those wheels just aren't working, no matter what the finish. And I do agree with the above poster on the fluids, have owned three of these things, and have seen little, if any, benefit from there fluids, nor from intake changes.

Upon viewing these two data-sheets, I feel that the Motul is a better product.

http://www.motul.com/system/product_...-40%20(GB).pdf

http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...l_1_0W-40.aspx

Ignoring the "AMG recommends Mobil" malarky, what are your opinions on the two?

I suppose the only way to truly answer the question is to run the Motul for a while, get it analyzed, then run the Mobil and analyze.

I have been running Motul 8100 X-Cess 5w40 in my race cars for years. All of the BMWs love the Motul. That doesn't mean I'm dead set on it. It also has MB/AMG approval in all applications with the SLR being the exception.

I've had great luck recently with Agip oils in my Porsche race car. I think that this Agip oil would be a good substitute for the Mobil/Motul. It's Agip i-Ride Moto2 5w40 (four stroke). Here's the data sheet: http://travel.eni.com/catalog/produc...n_IT_1_102.pdf

Well I got some more done. I decided to go with Motul fluids for the time being. The engine oil has a better rating than Mobil 5w40. I will get it analyzed once it's time to drain again.

So far I have:

Replaced cabin filters
Oil filter (filled now with Motul 8100 X-Cess 5w40 rated to 229.5 MB specs)
Transmission service including AT plug (filled now with Motul fluid--better than MB IMO)
Brakes disassembled (waiting on wheel studs (M12x1.5) to show up tomorrow)
Brake fluid flushed out and now filled with Motul RBF660 (trounces MB fluid)
Partially detailed
Spark plugs replaced
Air filters replaced with OEM
Coolant replaced with Agip Permanent Plus

What's left for the time being:

Dyno baseline in two weeks
Install wheel studs
Install new brakes
Finish detailing
Disable key beeper in instrument cluster
Think about what's next

Time for pictures!

I got started on the tops of the valve covers. I sure do love Worldpac. Only took them about an hour and a half to drop off my valve cover gaskets. I should have it back together by the end of the night.

Passenger side valve cover:

Drivers side (I'll take more pics of the process because the parts are larger on this side with the filler cap):

While you have your front wheels off - check the lower front ball joints - if you get any play at all - change them out - these are a common replacement items on Merc's - and since you are replacing plugs and valve cover gaskets - excellent time to put that new set of Headers on and let that motor breath
