1999 E55 AMG
Hi from a newbie
G'day guys,
Just got myself a 99 E55, and loving it!
Bit new to Mercedes (owned a 190E, many years ago), so have a few questions already.
1 - I'm not sure if this is normal, but I've noticed my exhaust smelling a bit fumey. Some may say rich smelling. I haven't had a petrol car, for a while, so not sure if this is right.
2 - Can anyone point me in the right direction for servicing? What does service A and B consist of. Is there a sticky for this?
3 - I'm searching for parts (preparing for servicing) and wondered if anyone has a parts list for filters etc. I noticed on Autohaus lists different type of engine oil filters. A paper or fleece type. How do I know which type I need?
4 - Is there a Haynes type instruction manual for servicing?
5 - Which obd reader do you guys use
6 - Is there a procedure for resetting the ecu and hence the gearbox 'memory'
Well, sorry for all the questions!
Awesome car. Difficult not to 'give it some beans' every time I take it out.
Kids think it's a blast!

1) It is hard to tell over the Internet what you're smelling, but have you done a tune up since you bought the car?
How many miles does it have?
Go under the car and see if you have 4 cats,2 upstream and 2 downstream,if cats have been removed it might smell different.
2) First of all,do you have Service A and B?
I have a '99 and it only has '' Service now ''. I believe Service A and B came in 2000 and up model years...
Are you sure yours is a '99?
If you do have it,do a Search on this forum and you will find the answer.
3) There you go :
http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...2@Air%20Filter
4) Don't know...
Use the Internet and if you can gain access to the Mercedes Service program called STAR...
5) Any OBD2 reader for 1996 models and up should work...
6)Disconnect the battery for half and hour.
Make sure you have your radio code before if you still have the original unit in the car...
You'll need to reset the windows one touch function and the memory seats.
You'll also get all kinds of lights coming on in your dash once you reconnect your battery. Don't worry about them, they will go off as you drive.
Enjoy!

Hi neanicu888
Great reply!
I'll check for the cats, to see how many there are. Never thought of that.
I was thinking maybe MAF or spark plugs. I've sent an email to the local dealer to see if they have detailed service history of the car. Hopefully this'll tell me what was done and when.
I'm not actually sure if it has service A or B. Just read it somewhere. If there isn't a service A and B, what are the servicing requirements?
Regarding the filters, you put a link to the air filters. What I'm not sure of is the oil filters as there seems to be 2 types.
http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...0@Oil%20Filter
Which one is the right one?
Many thanks again for your help
Cheers

You need 2 filters for your car. So you need to order 2 of that same filter.

The link I posted has 3 engine oil filters. 2 are paper and one is fleece.
A bit of research suggests the paper is for reduced service intervals and the fleece is for FSS intervals.
I'm not sure what FSS stands for, but I gather it's an automated service interval generated by style of driving etc.
Now that begs the question, how do I know if I have this system.
Any pointers, anyone.
Regarding service A and B, it looks like my car has been serviced using that philosophy. According to the booklet there is the option for A or B servicing.
So, does anyone know if service A (or B) flashes up when the required service is due?

Also forget about Service A and B! Those are just the Mercedes way of telling you to do maintenance. Once you get to know the car you'll be able to keep up with its maintenance : oil change, filters, belts, spark plugs etc.
Again,if it's a ' 99 I don't think you have Service A and B. Why don't you post a picture from your dash where it says Service A and B?
I've also asked you before : how many miles does your car have? It's important to know if you want advice for maintenance.

Woah, easy easy.
Vehicle has 220000klms.
Regarding the links, there seems to be some confusion.
MY original link was for OIL filters, and the link YOU posted was for AIR filters.
Yes I understand what OEM means, but my point is regarding the 3 different types of OIL filters on the below link.
Just in case, here is the link again for the OIL filters
http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...0@Oil%20Filter
I gather the fleece one is the better one.

I use the the Mann fleece,part HU7184X.
I believe the paper one is good too,but the fleece might last longer.
Ok...220.000km is about 137.000 miles,so if they haven't been done before I'd do :
Transmission service, check engine mounts, check all fluids(power steering, antifreeze, brake fluid),spark plugs, filters, serpentine belt. You don't need to replace all these items, but check their condition and replace if necessary.

OK, no worries.
Just going through Autohauz now.
I got a quote from MB which came to 5000 Australian dollars. Nearly had a heart attack!
You wouldn't happen to know hat oil is used in the diffs?

Ok,you're in Australia! Now I understand...
Does Autohaus deliver to Australia? I believe they're based somewhere in Texas,US...
I think you meant the oil for the differential. There's only 1 differential in E55s,between the rear wheels.
When it comes to fluids,it is very important in a Mercedes to use OEM,so I buy them from the dealer to be sure. Online parts stores are very confusing about fluids and not too many ship fluids...
Our differential takes 1.4 US qt(1.3L) HYPOID gear oil SAE 90, 85 W 90.
1.3 L shouldn't be that expensive to get from the dealer...

You want the Fleece filter.
Google or check MBUSA.com and you can probably find the W210 manual in PDF format which describes service A and B schedules.
Google or search this site for "sneaky ECU reset".
