Starting Problem

My 1st post

Just recently I have started getting a problem where the car will not start. The starter turns and the engine turns over but it will not fire. It will crank for a couple seconds then just stops, and sometimes a grinding noise will start, as if the starter is not fully engaged. On the 2nd the car will start and run fine. It seems to be worse when the engine is warm, after driving.

I happened to capture a video of what happens. Please take note on the video that I cranked it only ONCE. But you will hear it cranking twice. It tries you know...

My car is a 1995 e230 (4cyl 2.3L engine- automatic 4 speed tranny). I am from Asia. I have replaced the battery, fuel pressure regulator and i had the starter cleaned this week. The fuel pump has been replaced in 2009 or 2010.

I don't know where else to look at.

Seems you have a bad Starter or Starter Solenoid, did you check any of them......??

How dead was your battery there in the vid? How old is the battery? Try charging your battery at Autozone, or where ever you like, and/or get it tested there too. I know my dad's Jaguar, my wife's Maxima, and my Rover actually need like 14 volts or 13.5 volts to start. Battery is under the rear seat, there are two small 'hidden' levers, one under the front edge of the back seat on each side, the seat part comes off as one piece.

It could be you CPS (Crank position sensor) if battery is OK. If it goes out your car will just turn over and if it does start it will not run worth a poop.

I don't think its the solenoid mostly because the car is trying to turn over usually with a bad solenoid the gear on the starter will not engage with the flex-plate and your car will not turn over. But I have been wrong before and I will be wrong again. Good luck.

The battery is only a week old.

Sometimes it would crank for a second, but would cut out - Then I would hear a grinding noise. But it would start! Very weird. Sometimes it wouldn't.

Removed my K40 relay to rule it out and this is what greeted me...

Time to replace this? Possibly the cause of my issue or not?

I'm a NASA certified solder and technician and I can tell you that's one hell of a bodged repair job. Sorry man hoping it would be something simple for you like old battery.
