2002 E55 with X-Pipe (Video)

Hey everybody I do a lot of lurking, but thought I'd share my '02 E55. Recently had my x-pipe installed a couple days back. A few months ago I had the resonator and secondary cats removed and simply straight pipes in place. I enjoyed the new sound as it was much louder than before, but it seemed a bit uncontrolled and raspy-not the sound I thought this AMG should be emitting. Anyways, I went back in a few days ago and had the x-pipe installed. Exactly what I've been looking for! If anyone is contemplating this "mod" then go for it, you will not be disappointed. I'm done rambling. Here is nice little clip, let me know what you guys think

Appointment already made to get the tips straightened tomorrow morning..

Sounds fantastic! Thanks for posting the clip.

I've had my car for a few months now and am slowly getting her up to speed. I have a few more items in front of the exhaust but I'm really looking forward to that mod.

Did you get your x pipe and 45 degree bends from ebay?

Thanks,

ddb

Sorry, no successful interior clips. I tried shooting one, but didn't turn out as I'd hoped. Not too much drone or resonance inside. Roll the windows up and you really don't hear much. It truly is a tolerable, conservative, yet badass sound when WOT.

Hmmm...

Did the interior sound change much form just the resonator delete?

I have already done the resonator delete and want a little more rumble, but not in the cab.

Thanx eFifty5AMG!

While it did change, I find it quite tasteful. There is a bit of rumble, but you can still carry on a conversation without needing to shout or speak loudly.

Honestly to this day, I still think the best sound AMG exhaust is a W210 E55 AMG with x-pipe in place of 2nd cats and resonator bypass. It sounds fantastic. Add a set of shorty headers like these (link below), and the exhaust note will be even more amazing without being too loud and you should pick up decent amount of power too.

If you don't mind my asking, are you in any way affiliated with the seller?

After awhile, the exhaust will sound louder. Mine has a rumble when you give it gas. It will definitely sound better with the AMS headers. I will try and get a sound clip of my car as I have finally got to the sound I wanted.

Bro,

Your x-pipe looks badasssss!!!

That's what I'll do if I were to do it again and have it up in the place of the second cats...

Your post convinced me to finally get this modification. I'm booked in for 9am Saturday to get the X-Pipe fitted Secondary Cats and Resonator removed. I'll make sure I get before/after videos to share and compare. Thanks, James

Dang, I'm really thinking of removing my secondary cats. But then I was thinking of getting a pair of high flows.. (200cel) but now I'm thinking.. Hmm save $200 and go straight flush without any cats.....

I could always try it and see how I like it. 2.5 ? how long of piping do I need?

Links anyone?

Don't waste your money on hi-flow secondary cats. If you have the cash floating around, get yourself hi-flow primaries by all means, and combine that with the secondary cat removal, resonator removal. Get yourself an x-pipe too if you want a more controlled sound. If you want a wild sound, leave the x-pipe and go with straight through pipes. 2.5" is the magic number for diameter. In regard to the length of pipe, I would say that depends on where the OE stuff is cut/welded to fit the new piping, right?

I would buy the 5 ft 302 stainless 2.5in and cut them in half, which will be enough to cover the length of the secondary cats. You can get them pretty cheap at wholesale from eBay. If you want to have the x-pipe in place of the 2nd cats then you would get some shorter piping to go along with the x-pipe (2ft piping maybe? A foot a piece?).

But 5ft of piping and a pair of mandrel bends and x-pipe should take care of the 2nd cats and resonator delete.

Its these kinds of responses that make me really glad I joined this forum. Now I can go to my fitting on Saturday knowing even more of the details for the fabrication
