Some New Bling

When I had my engine cover/airbox dressed up a couple of months ago I knew I would have some exterior pieces done as well. Initially I thought I would do the B pillars in the same pattern and be done. I ended up doing some other parts first because I had some extra parts and could keep driving the car while they were being worked on.

My side mirror gaskets were in really bad shape. I think too much sun in Texas and California where the car had been previously. I looked for a new set of gaskets unsuccessfully and decided to buy a whole new set of complete aftermarket mirrors. They included the motor assemblies, gaskets and covers. This decision was made easier because my mirrors had a lot of issues: The painted covers were beat up badly; the gaskets were trashed; the passenger side motor was really sluggish; and the driver's side auto dimming function had failed (the passenger side had already been replaced with a standard mirror by the PO). The new covers came with black primer. So it was an easy decision to have the graphic applied.

I had never thought about doing the grill until snoozie mentioned it in an earlier thread. I had bought an all black grill and had it on for a little while, so I decided to have it done at the same time. If I didn't like it I had the OE grill so no big deal. Thanks for the idea, snoozie.

I will do the B pillars next in the same CF pattern. I'm also going to do the anodized trim under the side windows and around the rear window in black.

Note that I applied plastic dip to my emblems on the deck lid as well as the emblems on my engine cover. I also added a flat hood badge.

I'm loving this car!

I like that these pieces look black from a distance. You don't see the detail until you get fairly close to them.

I like the grille. If you don't want it later....let me know

If you don't mine me asking, how much did you pay to get the grille done?

Thanks, guys!

M3RC3D3SE55AMG: I looked for a white E55 unsuccessfully for months. Finally purchased a silver one. Were you specifically looking for a white one or was it just the right car for you that happened to be white? If you have any pics please post some.

snoozie: The grill and mirrors cost $211. Unfortunately I didn't ask for an itemized breakdown.

Thanks,

ddb

Thanks,

I was looking for black, white or silver in the beginning. Randomly, I even stumbled on a bright red E55, but by the time I went to see it, it had already sold As time went on and I viewed one or two cars, I began to swing towards white. I don' t know what it is about the colour, something to do with a pure and understated elegance which hides a stinking V8 attitude? I'll take some more photos of my car today and post them for you... For now I have these: https://mbworld.org/forums/members/m...amg-10525.html

66K is brand new!
I sold mine a couple of months ago. It was a 99 silver and not nearly as perfect as yours! Mine had 170K miles when I sold it...these cars last forever. I drive an E46 M3 now with Comp Pkg but I'll always remain a big fan of the W210 E55 and hopefully own one again at some point.

I'm doing all I can to keep it pristine. I wont be modifying the exterior of the car at all besides the ride hight, which has already been done. I love how the W210 looks as stock, even the wheels. However, I am modifying the sound system at the moment, replacing all the OE kit for high grade aftermarket stuff. I'm using all the original speaker positions, so it wont be known there is an upgrade, besides the obvious e.g. seeing the Pioneer head-unit and the quality/power of the sound itself... Also, I'm booked in on Saturday for the secondary cat/resonator removal modification thanks to the motivation of other members posts So engine and interior mods will continue to happen This E55 will look stock but sound and go like not

What has the transition from Mercedes to BMW been like for you? The drive, the attachment to the marque etc?

I change cars quite often...I have other cars...
The M3 is a sports car with a proper manual gearbox. The E55 is a luxury sedan with the heart(power train) of a lion and will handle like a boat if left stock. Very comfy car though...
Read a bit into AMG history...around those years they've taken the E430,modified the engine, different exhaust and very little on the suspension etc.
I believe I've read AMG started building the E63 from the ground up with performance in mind very recently, with the W212...

You saying they started the W212 from "scratch" would make total sense. The only part which seems to have sustained would be the M113 engine block? The rest, suspension and brakes etc is all new and high-tech. It makes everything more expensive and usually less reliable but nevertheless, it's progress and it must be working because the AMG marque is very highly sought after lately. I wonder how strong W212's will be once they're as old as W210's? I can't see that adaptive/dynamic W212 suspension still being alive after 13 years

The W212 started with the 6.2 L M156 V8 natural aspirated, then continued with the 5.4 L M157 twin turbo V8,which is a beast of an engine! Can easily be tuned to 700HP without many modifications.

Thats me being schooled right there! So they really did go back to the drawing board with the engineering! Would we agree that even though the power hikes are quite apparent, the cars are also getting heavier? So the extra power is necessary to keep pace?

They went to a twin turbo set up because of tougher and tougher emission regulations, but can not offer a newer model with less power than its predecessor. AMG is using the same type of logic by not going back and calling the model an E55 even though the displacement did go back down.
The newer models are getting heavier, they have more electronics and are more complicated.

Beautiful car! I love it. Thanks for posting the pics.

What color is the interior? Is the windshield tinted or is it just an illusion?

ddb: Thank you!

All windows beside the windshield are tinted and pretty heavily (its hot as hell out here Lol) so its just an illusion. The combination of all the other tints makes the windshield look tinted too I guess? The tints protect my skin and the skin on the seats Lol... The interior is the AMG "Condor" leather in black. Its in amazing condition. The driver entry side seat bolster is just starting to show a little wear but I'll be having the leather taken care of fully around Christmas time. Freshen everything up

I'll be uploading videos of the car soon. With the sound system modification process and the exhaust modification process... I'll make sure I post the links!

With all you've explained, you've given me this urge to make sure I build my old AMG to a level that can show the owners of newer models, that W210's still have the minerals to keep up Lol

These cars are pretty powerful when compare to the modern day American V8 engines and still pretty much in the running as far as top end WOT goes. I just showed a newer probably 2011 model GMC truck that my engine sounded just as loud and as powerful (if not much quicker on the top end) then his truck yesterday. Check out my posting on the recent header thread.

I guess M3RC3D3SE55AMG....must have read my posting from yesterday
