Window lift automatic reset(?)

Left my lights on in the garage last night and woke up to a dead battery. Took it to Sears to get it recharged, it took 40 minutes. Put the battery back in the car and all seemed to be well until I tried to use my window lifts in "one click automatic" mode. That function no longer works on any of the windows. They'll raise and lower with no problem but I have to keep my finger on the button. If I push it until it clicks it'll stop raising or lowering. Also starting with the window fully raised or lowered gives me the same result. No movement.

Is there a reset procedure?!?

press the lift button half (not automatic) until the window closes and wait until you hear the motor release... you can hear it very quiet like a "*gnuggg*" when the motor releases. that educates the lifter where the final window position is. Same for the sunroof.

greetings, Fabian

Okay, so maybe I inadvertently did this and didn't realize it, thereby fixing the problem myself. This might explain why only one window isn't responding correctly. I'll use your technique on that on today.

As for the sunroof...are you suggesting that the sunroof has automatic capabilities as well?!? I often wondered about this but never asked... If so, how do I 'train' it to go into that mode. Are you saying just keep holding the button until I hear that "clunk"?

The owner's manual has the reset procedure listed for the windows and sunroof.
It is actually a bit different than described above.

Hold the switch at the top (closed) for 2 sec. For sunroof, tilt open and hold 1 sec.

So I guess there's a difference between '00 and '01 E55's... it appears that the automatic function for the sun roof began in '01. My manual does not read the same as the one you posted, and the steps taken to initiate that function in the '01 don't work on my '00

Just to be sure, you realize that the "auto" function of the sunroof only works on the open movement (sliding to the rear, not tilt). For closing the switch always has to be held until closed.

BTW, when I checked the 'online' 2000 E-class manual, it had similar information about the express sliding feature.

Yes, I am aware of that, thank you...

Now this is interesting, because after reading this post I investigated a little more and discovered that the "online" manual and my hard covered manual are not exactly the same. They have the same Part Number and Title Illustration Number but the Press Time dates differ. You'll see this in the attached pics. The manual that came with my car was printed 06/24/99 and the online (revision?!?) was printed 10/31/00. Also, in this revision, the page numbers and the information related to the automatic, or "Express Opening" is spelled out clearly, but in my manual it is not included and the page numbers differ (please see attached pics for differences).
