ESP/BAS

I had been recently getting the ESP/BAS light turning on on my dash upon start up, I did some research and ended up replacing the brake switch by the pedal.. Since this problem was very intermittent, I had to wait a while to see if it was "fixed". It has not fixed this issue.

I am a bit concerned about the fact that I only have the esp/bas light on, with no abs light on. When this happens, I loose traction control and stability, but my abs continues to work perfectly. My research has pointed me towards the esp module, that is no longer made/available and needs to be bought used and re-programmed.

Anyone have experience with this?

Sorry to hear that.
Did you scan for codes?
Do you remember when exactly did the warning appear?
It might be a sensor or a wire, not the whole unit. I believe that used units need to be coded using SDS.

Good luck

It started to do it when temps dropped below freezing here. I have not had a chance to get it on the scanner. Will a standard obdII/canbus scanner work? Or do I need the star diagnostics ?

It is very intermittent. I can go a full week without it happening, then the next day it will happen a few times. When it does happen I can just shut the car off, turn it back on, and it's gone.

I can't tell about the scanner. I'm using a $15 Bluetooth OBD scanner , hooks up to my phone so far it shows everything.
How's your battery and alternator? if the voltage drops it can trigger the warning.

Did you try the lock-to-lock steering?

Battery is only about a year old, oem Mercedes battery, I just checked the alt now that you mentioned it, 14.4 at idle..
What is this lock to lock thing? something to do with steering angle input?

By turning the steering wheel all the way to the left then right a few times, you reset the sensor, if I were you I'd give it a try.
you need to reset the steering sensor after replacing/disconnecting the battery by the above procedure ↑

Agree with "Solo", important to reset "steering angle sensor" first,,

then see, it could be bad brake switch/brake pressure sensor/TB got Error during age.

ZAYED,,

I've had a couple times where I get the ESP/BAS light on the dash as well, only when the car has been left outside in the cold (-20C or so). If I shut the car off and restart the dash light doesn't come back...so far. I'll be watching the thread for things to try.

Hmmm.. I did unhook the battery a little while back when I put the new spring perch on (unhooked for welding) I'll give it a shot.

I found another way to get the esp bas AND the abs light to come on... I was in a foul mood, and my wife snapped at me, so I went for a cool down drive.. out to a back road with a huge open intersection and did A LOT of donuts, as I came back onto the road I wanted to be on to get back to town, I noticed all those lights had come on. I stopped, shut the car off, turned it back on, and they all went away again... HMMMM does the car just geek out when you play a little to hard, or could it be related?

Could it be the steering sensor finally going out?
Or maybe, just maybe the bushings are bad. So when you push the car hard it triggers an error that cannot be reset, only by restarting the car?

Good luck.
