w210 E55 front tie rod ends

This weekend I'm replacing the front "outer" tie rod ends myself. The driver's side tie rod is worn causing movement, but the other side is okay. I think it's best to replace them in pairs so I will replace both.

Ordered the parts from Pelican Parts. They have a nice DIY with pics. Anyway this is a simple job that should be fun.

Right now (before replacement) the car tracks beautifully, so I think the alignment is spot on.

If I put the new rod end exactly where the old one was then the alignment should be the unchanged or very near. A test drive after the repair will give me a seat of the pants feel for the alignment. I think only toe in/out would be affected. So when I take it in for an alignment I'm only going to ask for toe to be checked.

MB of Annapolis quoted me $179 for an alignment. Is this typical and I guess asking for only toe is the same price as full alignment?

Why don't change the inner rods also? I'm curious.
$179 for an alignment?
MB(Ogilvie) of Ottawa charged me $110 including tax and everything.

I agree, might as well do the inners and change the bootkit for good measure. As I go through my car, I find that 13+ years wears the rubbers and plastics down everywhere- my boots were dried out but not cracked. Its not that much more time. Get the OEM bootkit. I tried Febi and the fit was inconsistent. The boot clamps on the boots are tricky and you may need screw type clamps unless you have the wicked german tool to pinch the clamp. I believe it is a 27MM open end wrench for the inners and bring your muscle. You will see a good improvement in feel and tracking. Did mine at a DIY garage that rents lifts which makes it worlds easier.

My alignment was $150 at MB. $125 at Indie.

Good luck!
