It looks to me that something belongs here. There's a nice bracket and some connectors, but no part. Can anyone tell me what belongs here, and if it is important? Thanks
(The big hole right behind the upper rad hose.)

Seeing that you're from British Columbia, I'm assuming your E55 is a Canadian spec car. If so, the secondary air injection pump was there when the car was sold and the pump is now missing.
FWIW, my '99 E55 is a Canadian-spec car imported to the US years ago. It most certainly has the air injection pump.
The pump activates to inject additional air to reduce emissions.

My E55 was imported from Japan. When entering into the province, it went through government mandated inspection. Apparently, it passed, or I wouldn't have it now. Probably due to the pump not required in Japan, so not installed, and our inspection states that any and all manufacturer's equipment be present if it was on the car originally. (Plus the bonus that the AirCare program has been cancelled.)

Awesome, I've replaced a few secondary air pumps on the M113 engine. If mine ever goes I may not replace it and check to see if I have to code the control module to Japan or not. I'm curious to know what the difference in engine running is.

I'm guessing, but it probably has very little to do with performance. If it was belt driven, then yes. If it is for emissions control, and the pump fails, the ECM would probably go into some sort of default and adjust fuel/air mixture. Like I said, I'm guessing and going on info from the last century when I worked on these things.
