Weird tranny sound
Getting off the highway today, all of a sudden a fairly loud noise appeared that sounds like i caught a plastic bag under the car and it's flapping in the wind. I'm hearing it pretty clearly through where the shifter is.
No apparent vibration through the shifter, or drivetrain. I can only HEAR the sound, car does not act any differently. And yes, I checked for a bag under the car.
At 0-20 mph, not apparent.
20mph and one, gets more rapid and louder. Is a constant noise.
Any ideas?

Most likely the noise is caused by a piece of insulation in the transmission tunnel falling down and hitting the driveshaft. Have a look and if you can reattach it then do that, otherwise just cut it back a little bit to stop it touching. If it's not touching but it's very close it can still cause the noise, it may move depending on the temperature in the trans tunnel.

Ausmbtech.... I wish that was it but upon some more internet digging, I have found a video of a c43 with a bad u-joint or driveshaft... this is exactly my noise to a varying degree. I guess my search is on for a driveshaft.
Does anyone know if the 210 e55 driveshaft is shared by any other models?

How many miles on your vehicle? U-joints do go bad but on these vehicles it is not as common. Not a terrible thing to go of all the things it could have been. You can check your u-joints yourself by getting under the rear of the vehicle and twisting or wiggling the driveshaft by hand. If the U-joint or joints (not sure if the w210 has one or two) are bad the driveshaft will feel loose or sloppy. A small amount of play (like 1-2cm) isn't unusual though.

Or it can be your flex disc. I had changed mine and they were pretty bad. Worth looking at. They could have just been on the way out and that last pull might have killed them?

Car has 80,000 miles and no rust, a very babied example.
Well, this is interesting. Apparently I picked up some kind of construction wire (maybe stucco wall wire) that wrapped around driveshaft at center bearing, slamming into the surrounding area on every rotation.. Indie has removed this, but he says there's still some noise, and he's got his stethoscope out.
Ausmbtech, you were right, there was something down there that wasn't supposed to be. Good call.
Armani, thanks for the info. I'll replace flex disks if needed.
