Should I buy?
This guy has a 2001 E55 with 125k on the odometer and wants $8200 for it.. I think that is pretty high but I know market has a lot to play into it. What do you guys think? And if I go look at it, what are the common things I should pay special attention to? Hope to get some helpful guidance on this..
Says..
New continental tires
Everything works
Sub was professionally wired
Maintenance done in the last 6 months:
2 oil changes with the better filter and Mobil 1 0-40
both air filters changes
cabin air filters changed
Brand new belt
front wheel bearings
4 brand new tires/alignment

As long as its not a salvage, I say go for it. 125K is nothing on these cars. Make sure you get the trans fluid FLUSHED OUT (not just a pan drop) and refilled with Mercedes .14 fluid. New tires are nice as they can be pricey. Make sure that it aligned. (see the shop report). I would ask the seller why they changed the front wheel bearings. These almost never need replacing.

Alright, I can do that. If there were some competition on buying it and the final price were to end up at $9,000, would that be obscene? That's getting into W211 pricing from what I have seen.

Best car, hands down I have ever owned. Reliable, fast, comfortable, safe, practical, fun to drive, classy, performer, low maintenance/easy to repair. Watch out for 2003 to 2005 W211's. Quality and reliability issues. Higher maintenance.

You can find $12k to $15K W211 but terrible condition. W210 $8K is OK. I paid my 02 silver $8K few months ago with 135K miles.

I just pulled a carfax on it and apparently it was rear ended in 2007. Just found a guy with a '05 who is in a rough financial spot that is willing to get rid of his clean E55 for $11k flat. And his carfax checks out %100 with 109k miles.

You better see it in person and do a PPI. $11K is too good to be true.

Forgive my ignorance but what do you mean by PPI? The pictures of it look good the only defect on the body is a slight hairline crack on the front bumper. He did say that the front lower ball joints and front rotors will need some attention in the future. Here is a sheet of what he has done to it.

I feel pretty competent on my mechanical abilities to do the inspection myself but I'm curious as to how much a mercedes dealership would charge to do a formal inspection.. Any round about ideas?

I think a PPI is always good wisdom, and not necessarily to take it to the stealership to get it done. Depending on who is in your area, I'd look for a trusted Independent Shop first. Although you may be very proficient in r/r on these cars, purchasing with eyes wide open is still a wise choice, I would think. Personally, I just hate to be blindsided by what WASN'T mentioned before the purchase...
