Exhaust/Header build thread

As briefly mentioned in another thread here, after discovering a bad primary cat, I decided to have my indie shop (FluidMotor Union) build a set of long tube headers.

FMU started the build a couple of weeks ago, but the last few days I noticed my tail pipe has been hanging lower every time I look at it. Took it to the local muffler shop today to find this problem of my muffler hanging by a thread:

As expected, the muffler shop told me they couldn't weld it so I guess I also need a new muffler. I had them weld a temporary hangar to hold me until the headers are finished.

Where are the Brabus mufflers when you need them

The obvious plan is to delete my primary cats and do a tune to eliminate the CEL, but now I'm considering deleting the muffler as well, or maybe going with a Magnaflow

Questions: how many of you guys have deleted the muffler altogether, and if you did, what does it sound like? What components do you have in place (primary/secondary cats, etc.)

Any insightful opinions? I will be posting progress here with plenty of pics, as the build continues.

You might be the first W210 to get a set of longtubes. I'm looking forward to the finished results.

That helps answer the question. Thanks illest.

I might run it straight for a while, but I really like the sound of the Magnaflow

I know mine might sound a little different, because our total exhaust systems are different (I'm not planning on running race cats)...

Go straight pipes and see how it goes. If the drone is too much then you put a magnaflow on. ..if my exhaust go, I'll probably do a magnaflow because the elusive eisenmann will never show up. Your car probably sound awesome with the long tubes

What is so elusive about Eisenmann? Aren't they readily available through ind-distribution?

You must make sure you make the primary runners are equal length and that they have correct diameter.

http://www.superstreetonline.com/how...m-made-header/

If you have unequal length, the exhaust pulses will collide at certain RPMs creating an uneven power band and an exhaust system that isn't tuned to your engine's power band.

Equal length guarantees no weirdness.

Get the runners sized right for proper scavenging, velocity, and flow and you will have very impressive gains. Far beyond any shorty or tri-y Kleeman or Supersprint can offer.

See if your shop can make a jig so they can make more!

Good luck!

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking I'll do.
I'm definitely looking forward to the sound too!

Great advice, and I'll be sure to bring these points up in design discussions. That's actually a very informative write-up!

I'll ask them about making more in the future, I'm almost sure they'll want to. I'll let you know!

Damn dude....I think you are on to something big. If these headers fit well with the engine, you will definitely be the first to have a set of longtubes for the W210 E55 as far as we know in this forum. how are you going to connect the primary tubes to the collector? Since you are customizing it, you could make a short collector tube right before the break where the primary cats bolt onto the downpipe. That way, you keep the original downpipes to prevent from having problems with the steering. I would weld the O2 sensors where it originally resides and get some extenders or do a tune and delete the primaries. Can't wait to see the finish headsers

Yes, this is a very exciting time for me, for sure. What you stated, regarding the collector, is actually the plan. Although keeping the original down pipe is much simpler than fabricating one from scratch, I'm more than sure we'll fabricate an identical down pipe using the same materials so we should be fine clearing the steering column. The plan is to go catless and tune the ECU.

I can't wait either- the job should be done next weekend- this build has me giddy!

hey, quick question, if you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for this (ballpark)? I'm thinking of doing this or going with a set of shorties from Eurocharged.

Thanks

I wouldn't mind telling you, but this project is a unique deal for me because of a longstanding relationship with the fabricators/tuners. I can tell you that they're most likely interested in providing this build for other members of this forum, but I want to chill on offering that to members until I have them successfully installed on my vehicle, including the corresponding tune.

I do know that here in the w210 AMG forum, as it relates to the Eurocharged shorties, the question of compatibility with 210's hasn't been answered yet. This is leading some of us to believe the compatibility isn't proven yet, as it has been with the w211, because they have the same shorties listed in both the 211 and the 210 forum.

I'll be hanging out at the shop tomorrow and will ask for a ballpark figure to give you guys here. Feel free to PM me here also. Stay tuned to progress here, and there on the Eurocharged thread, before making a decision.

I'm running the resonator and muffler delete and sounds awesome, my neighbors hate me in the morning. I'm thinking of deleting the secondories as well but it might be overkill. But definitely consider running the muffler delete Benzokirk.

I have an X-pipe I'm going to install in a couple of weeks. I'll update on that mod for any curious users.

I have an X-pipe, cat delete and resonator delete. Thinking of trying two of these next to each other (like two pieces of bread in a slot toaster) to replace the stock muffler.

sure, try to take pics while they're installing it, if they'll allow it, but at least when they're done. looking forward to seeing your progress!
