Possible to test a w210 cluster outside of a car?
I have a w210 e55 cluster that I expect to be low mileage (under 100k), but wanted to confirm that it works prior to putting it up for sale. I do have both full harnesses to the cluster with enough wire to test. Anyone know if it is possible to test if the cluster works, or at least the display with the mileage works? and if so, what wires are power/ground.. thanks!

There is a brown or brown/red stripe wire in to the harness for the cluster that is 12V power. I don't know the exact pin location for the connector on the cluster, though. If you have the harness you can match it up. That should display mileage and time. Regardless of testing it, if you sell it, someone will have to virginize it using the full version of MB STAR before it will work with a new ECU or electronic ignition switch (EIS). When the key is inserted, the ECU and cluster both cross-check EIS and key signals received against each other before the signal to unlock the EIS will be sent. If absolutely everything doesn't match up the car will not start. You may already know this; I did not until I had an EIS go bad on me.

Sorry; meant to type brown/brown red stripe. I believe that the red stripe would be your positive lead and brown is your negative (ground). I found a wiring diagram on one of the forums somewhere that I used when I did some repair to my cluster. If I recall, the power that supplies the cluster is in a circuit that includes the left front CAN and one other.
