intermittent display disappearing and cooling fans running on

Hi everyone, I have just bought my dad a 2002 e240 but has a fault that the seller did not inform me of. When the car gets warm the multi function display goes out, dash lights flicker on and off with speedo going up and down then all goes out and nothing displayed.

Has anyone any ideas on what is causing this fault. thanks

Thanks for your reply Plutoe.

I have a starting point for the fans now but I think the two are linked together as the fans only operate on their own when the display is blank.

The CAN is the only common link, if I am not mistaken. Does it happen only when the A/C is on? This would indicate a possible short somewhere in the fan circuit that is affecting the cluster, since their purpose is to draw air through the A/C condenser. Otherwise, I would look closely at the CAN. You will need Mercedes' SDS or equivalent diagnostics to read data from it.
Edit: not to insult you; CAN is controller area network, that links groups of systems together and shares sensor data and inputs between them. More information about it is here https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...a-network.html if anyone wants more.

Hi NAFT1 thanks for your reply.

When you air con, do you mean in cold condition ? I picked the car up from my dads tonight to try and diagnose the fault over the next couple of days starting with alternator and battery and going from there.

On the way home all was for 11 miles and only had radio on when all the dash lights flashed up speedo and revs drop to zero display blank and then all came back on. Trip computer reset itself to zero.

So turned radio off and drove for 20 miles not issues at all with no load anywhere happened again. so tried loading up electrical system interior fans on, lights on using cruise control on,off multiple times increase/decrease speed and nothing. turned fan down to 2 then after a few more miles it started again this time doing it 2 or 3 times in succession than nothing. got home all display working, menus etc and engine fan all good.

Could it be the sam unit under the fuse box and if so can I do a direct swap with another unit.

thanks in advance.

Sounds like the front SAM/Can Bus module (different name for same part) to me is the most likely cause. The aux fans in W210s only come on when A/C compressor is running and the system needs them to reduce condenser temps to fall within limits, one of the functions of this module. The CAN Bus rarely goes bad unless there is water intrusion or a short somewhere that fries it. Can Bus is interchangeable but must be coded correctly for region and equipment options, requiring MB SDS. Carsoft, etc.will let you code them as well. if you get a used unit, make sure it comes with all fuses and relays and is guaranteed to work. The issue can be in the module itself or one of the relays. An idiot at MB of Plano once coded my C-class front SAM as European region and A/C, SRS, TCS, ABS, radio and other modules no longer worked or went haywire. I would have a competent independent specialist read the codes and telemetry from the module to determine what is up as it could take may hours of testing with a multimeter to find a bad component or PCB to verify that it is the CAN bus, if you found it at all.

Have got the car booked in with an independent specialist for a diagnostic check £90 and will go from there.

i had the instrument cluster out today and can get the display going on and off etc while stationary so think it may be the cluster is faulty. Ordered up good 2nd hand unit so will see what happens.

diagnosis isn't until the 19th so have got time to test cluster. I will post up results when known in case others get the same problem.
