2001 E55 precautions for changing Trans fluid?

Own a 2001 E55. 80,000 miles original owner. Going for 25 years with original transmission fluid doesn’t seem like a great idea. Same with differential.

Any precautions to be aware of? How long does it generally take to drain all the ATF?

The following is from an AI google search. Is it accurate?

To power out (flush) the transmission fluid in a Mercedes W210 (722.6 5-speed),
drain the pan and torque converter, then use the transmission's pump to cycle new fluid through. Key steps include draining, replacing the filter/gasket, refilling with ~4-5 liters, disconnecting the return cooler line, and running the engine to flush out old fluid while adding new, usually requiring 8-10 liters total for a complete change.
Procedure for Powering Out/Flushing W210 Fluid:
  • Prep: Ensure the gearbox is at running temperature. Raise the car on ramps.
  • Drain Pan & Converter: Remove the plastic cover and drain the ATF from the pan (5mm hex). Locate the torque converter drain plug by rotating the engine clockwise at the crankshaft pulley (27mm socket). Drain both to remove the majority of the fluid.
  • Filter & Pan: Remove the transmission pan (6 Torx bolts). Replace the transmission filter, clean the pan and magnet, and install a new gasket.
  • Refill: Reinstall the pan and drain plugs. Fill the transmission with approximately 4-5 liters of new ATF (Mercedes-approved fluid) through the dipstick tube.
  • The "Power Out" Flush:
    1. Disconnect the transmission return cooler line.
    2. Place the line in a drain bucket.
    3. Have an assistant start the engine (neutral/park). The pump will force old fluid out.
    4. As old fluid pumps out, continuously add new fluid to the filler tube at the same rate to prevent running the pump dry.
    5. Stop when the fluid coming out is clean and bright red.
  • Final Level Check: Reconnect the cooler line. With the engine running at operating temperature (

), check the level with a specialized transmission dipstick (must reach the bottom of the pan) and add fluid until it is within the 80C range.

A messy job.
-Be aware that later models may not have the torque convertor drain plug.
-Be sure you drain the fluid and then replace the electrical connector on the passenger side front of the transmission. Don't bend pins or strip the very small captive bolt when reinstalling. If you pull the connector before draining, you will be drenched in fluid...(don't ask me how I learned that).
-The above description in your post is correct. If that procedure cannot be followed, an alternative I've seen is replace fluid after reassembly, drive the car for a few miles, then drain the fluid again and then refill. That should replace ~3/4ths of the fluid.
-Take a look at the transmission lines before starting the job; in my case, one of the lines was leaking and needed replacing. Better to know in advance and have the new part on-hand rather than discovering it in the middle of the job.
-Transmission pan bolt torque value is 8 N-m or 70 in-lbs.

-Parts catalog here:

You want to look in the 210.074, "From model year code 800". That is MY2000 and later. Mine is in the 210.074, "Up to model year code 809" as my E55 is a 1999 model.

Thanks very much BBirdwell,

Of course the internet is replete with scary stories about improper technique of flushing, and by the same token, some say the fluid is supposed to be lifetime.
