M5 will still be the best car in this class.
IMHO, it can't be the best car in its class if it's got too many issues. I hope it doesn't have issues for those that buy one but I'd be afraid that motor is going to be like the 12 cylinder engines they were making in the late 80's. They were cool at the time but turned out to be total junk! You can hardly give an old 750 away.

Perhaps a better way of putting it would be the best car in its class when it is working.

The M5 will be a family saloon with amazing cornering abilities, good luck with the M5 Mhh

on the other hand, I hope the next E AMG will be a highly tuned NA with some tricky electronic differentials

01 E55 AMG
The new M5 and M6 are going to be awesome driver's cars. I love the snarl of the V10. I wouldn't buy one until it's in production for at least a year though. I expect they will hold their resale value better than MB's. MB has had some pretty serious quality issues of its own recently.

Have yet to see a new Bangle designed BMW holding its value. I think quality issues wise, the latest BMWs (5, 6 and 7) do have their fair share of problems.

If I buy the M5, it'll be for the handling and not the engine nor problem-free electronics. Count me in as one of those who worries about the reliability of a first year BMW engine.

I'm in the same boat...Generally, when I buy a car, I'm not worried about things like reliability or long-term longevity. I trade my cars about every 18 months and no longer than 3 years. If the engine fails, fine, BMW will replace it and hopefully it'll work out. If not, buy back, eat my losses and move on. I buy what's the best...I'm not loyal to one brand.

I've had my fair share of problems with my E55 and BMW 745Li, but it doesn't really bother me. Fix them, and move on.

Here's observation (take it or leave it for what it's worth)...Many members seem to keep their car for no more than 3 years, and complain about long term longevity of the car...I don't see why it's such a big deal. If you're so worried about long term life...Get a Lexus.
