Mercedes Insignia
Why do some Mercedes have the ornament on the hood opposed to just the plain badge. Is it up to the customer to pick which one they want or do certain cars have badges and certain cars have the ornament.Did all e55's come with the Mercedes ornament on the hood as opposed to the badge?

I believe it used to be that sedans got the upright ornament, and the coupes and roadsters got the flat badge. Now with all the new classes being made, the differentiation is less clear. I dont' think you can specify which one you get.

I believe the tri-star sets the E class apart from others and makes it unique. I'd rather have my star than a badging.

Yep...the offical position is.....
The Star on the hood is for Sedans.
The Star in the grille/badge on the hood is for Coupes, Convertibles and SUV's.
The CLS is the odd ball - but MB refers to it as a Coupe, so, star in the grille.
In Germany, you can option out the rear lettering if you wish. (ie. SL500)
