E55 vs 996 turbo?

Have any E55 owners driven the 996 turbo? I know that it can handle better around corners, but how did it feel in comparison to your car in straight line acceleration? Thanks.

Having owned both, they are very close is straight line performance. Do a search on this topic, it has been discussed to death in the past.

Before I bought my E55, I used my 996TT as my daily driver.

As far as straight line accelerating goes, the turbo is faster hands down. To me and my butt, the 996TT is just a much lighter car and you can really feel the car take off. But for real world situations, the E55 would be able to produce much more consistent acceleration times. For me, in order to get the sub-4 sec 0-60 times, I would have to drop the clutch from about 4500 for the TT. With the E55, I can just mash the throttle and get a consistent 4.4-4.5 0-60 time.

Both are awesome cars, and if I didn't need the extra space, I would have kept driving my TT as my daily driver.

Chris,

Thanks for the reply. I have a 02 C2 and love it. Just looking for a family car, and was wondering the feel of the E55.

Thanks

No Problem! Right now, in my opinion, the E55 is the best family 4 door car you can buy today... It's a heavier car, so the feel of the acceleration is a bit subdued. For example, when I take friends for a ride who have rode in my 996TT, they said the E feels a lot slower. I don't think it's a matter of the E being a lot slower, but more a matter of a larger and more isolated car (suspension and sound).

Let me know if I can help...

I consistently run under 12 but my car is slightly modified. When it was stock, I ran consistent 12.1 or 12.2s. I think that is comparable in speed to the turbo. I am sure that 0 60 times are slower for e55 due to the four drive.

Shouldn't even be a question.

E55 all the way.

I am excited to test drive one! 12.1 in the 1/4 mile for a sedan is insane. That's stock?

What kind of gas mileage do you guys get using it as a daily driver?

I noticed I can only get an 05 E55? How come not a 06? Are they changing something soon?

I get around 17 MPG. Not so bad for a performance sedan. I believe MY06 E55s will begin delivering in September. Until then, the '05s are your currents.

You can't go wrong with the E55 as a competent family hauler/tourer. As a fellow 2thdoc, I can tell you with great confidence that you won't be disappointed. If you could step up to an S600, you may have better straight line peformance especially if you perform the Renntech upgrades. The V12 TT is a beast as well with awesome potential.

I own both and they are two drastically different cars. My Turbo has 700HP so its not even close power wise. But one six eight is right in the fact is is hard to reproduce consistent times in the turbo. I can do sub 12 second quarter miles all day long, but in the right hands its probably capable of low 11's or high 10's. I do not even put these two cars in the same class. The Turbo is one of if the not best all around sports car and the e55 is the best sedan in the world. IMHO

Duane hit the nail on the head...I also own both and they can't be compared. Both are amazing for thier respective classes. Sports car vs. a sporty sedan...both bone stock. In a straight line I had the opportunity to run both cars side by side. My wife in the MB and me in the p-car. From a 25 or so MPH roll she actually pulled me. I was a little low in the revs in 2nd, but even at full power the MB kept pulling. In turns, however, no comparison at all. Pretty impressive for a 4150lb sedan.

700 horsepower stock, that is amazing. I will try and get one from my dealer. What options do I check to get the 700 hp option? The question was asked about straight line performance. Of course there is no comparision in any performance category other than straight line acceleration between the two. I regularly beat my friends STOCK Viper (other than some exhaust work) in the quarter mile when mine was stock and I have seen him beat a TT twice:

They are both awesome cars and both perform different duties. Stock for stock they are VERY close. It would be up to driver to pull the win.

I would actually give the advantage to the E55 because of easier launch and better top end pull. I've dragged a stock 996TT on the highway with my stock E55 and I pulled him.

Take your pick:

Duane is half correct. The Turbo is the best sports car in the world, but, its the 993TT.

I knew it wasn't stock, I was trying to make the point that we all could modify cars to obtain better performance but than we have no basis to make statements. But yes I would buy one too
